MADISON - Democrats have cancelled a hearing on a mining bill scheduled for Saturday in Ashland after Republicans scheduled a hearing in Hurley for next week.
The Assembly Jobs Committee, headed by Republican Rep. Mary Williams, set the second hearing on the mining bill for Wednesday, Jan. 11 at the Hurley Inn.? The exact time of the hearing was not immediately available.
The bill streamlines the state's complex mine permitting process. The GOP hopes the bill will kick-start plans for an iron mine just south of Lake Superior.
Williams was criticized last month for holding a hearing in West Allis, a Milwaukee suburb hundreds of miles from the mine site.? Williams aide Charlie Bellin says his boss thought a Senate mining committee would hold a northern hearing but nothing has emerged from that panel. He says she heard enough outrage over the West Allis site she decided a northern hearing was justified.
Sen. Bob Jauch and Rep. Janet Bewley, Democrats whose districts include the site of the proposed mine, announced the cancellation of their hearing shortly after the Assembly hearing was announced, saying hearings chaired by opposing parties would lead to more confusion and create more division on the issue.? Jauch and Bewley said they would attend Wednesday's hearing.
