Is Affiliate Marketing Good Business

The ugly truth is that almost tens of thousands of people who get involved in a business opportunity become part of an enormous market segment that's being misled, manipulated, and exploited.

There seems to be no shortage of opportunities available these days. Inside the home based business industry, you'll find a myriad of different 'flavors' of money-making opportunities, but generally speaking, there are 3 primary business models that many individuals are familiar with within the home based business arena. I wish to let you know about one of these: internet affiliate marketing business.

Affiliate Marketing Business - Yes it is a business and a very large one at this. This is one of the simplest ways to make money with internet affiliate marketing because there are hundreds, otherwise thousands of affiliate programs that you can sign-up with and begin making money immediately. Many of them are free to become listed on. When affiliate marketing, you market a specific company's product or service, and when you send them a person (make a sale), you're paid a commission.

Here's a quick example to make money with affiliate marketing... ever notice the number of websites promote books from Amazon.com? Well, most of these websites are in fact Amazon.com affiliates... so when someone clicks one of their links using their site and buys a book on Amazon, the web site owner automatically gets to be a commission directly from Amazon.

Russell Brunson

Listed here are 4 Advantages of Affiliate Marketing:

1. Work From Home - With unemployment at record highs and most people unhappy with their jobs, individuals are embracing other helpful information on extra monthly income.

2. Start up Cost Are Minimal - An Affiliate Marketing Business is very inexpensive. On average, you can get started for under $100. Most professional marketers will have their own domain name, hosting package and autoresponder. All fairly inexpensive business necessities when nowadays online internet business.

3. No products to create - When joining a joint venture partner program, you select the products you want to promote without all the hassles of actually needing to create the product. Because the affiliate you also do not have to handle the shipping and customer support issues.

4. The power of the internet - It really works for you 24/7. You set ads on various marketing platforms, some paid some free and generate a sale which results in a commission whenever during the day or evening. This is actually the great thing about making money with affiliate marketing!

There are thousands of great affiliate marketing programs you are able to join and earn a resale commission when one of your customers buys their product. Generally commissions ranges from 25% - 50%. Some commissions are a once deal (selling a magazine on Amazon) plus some are monthly residual incomes. You might suggest an autoresponder to a customer/web visitor plus they purchase from your link and you'll receive commission each month once they remain a person.

Casino Groups Fork Out Lobbying Bucks In Maryland ? CBS Baltimore

BEN GILES
The Washington Examiner

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (AP) ? Maryland?s top lobbyists cashed in on the General Assembly?s casino debate this year, as the state?s nine highest-earning lobbyists all worked for companies with interests in a statewide gambling expansion.

Gambling organizations and groups tied to Maryland?s horse racing industry spent hundreds of thousands of dollars between Nov. 1, 2011 and April 30, in an effort to influence lawmakers to support their respective interests.

Penn National Gaming, the owner of Rosecroft Raceway in Fort Washington, spent the most, with 877,432.84 reported, according to the Maryland State Ethics Commission?s twice-annual report.

The Pennsylvania casino group spent roughly $375,000 more than the next highest organization, the Maryland State Education Association.

Rosecroft?appeared the most likely destination for a Prince George?s casino before County Executive Rushern Baker threw his support behind a larger casino project at National Harbor. While the company tried to defend its interests in Maryland, it easily eclipsed spending by other gambling organizations in the state.

CBAC Gaming LLC, the group behind the bid for a Baltimore casino, spent $163,309.

The Cordish Cos., developer of the newly opened Maryland Live! Casino, spent $86,542.50 as it fights a proposed Prince George?s casino.

And the Peterson Cos., developer of the Prince George?s casino?s likely destination, National Harbor, spent $61,367.64.

Lawmakers are still locked over a proposal that would add a sixth state casino site in Prince George?s County and authorize table games such as blackjack and roulette.

Some lobbyists? six-month compensation nearly matched their earnings for the entire year prior to the latest report from the Ethics Commission, which ranks lobbyists who paid $50,000 or more.

Gerard Evans, the state?s highest-earning lobbyist, raked in $1.05 million over the last six months ? not far off the $1.23
million he earned from November 2010 to October 2011.

?It?s a debate that?s unfortunately captivated the General Assembly in some way,? Evans said, who lobbied on behalf of Penn National. ?And anytime you have issues that are so important, you are going to have costs associated with it.?

Evans? contract with Penn National ended in April, he said.

Other top-ranked lobbyists include Joel Rozner, who represents CBAC?Gaming LLC and the Maryland Jockey Club; Lisa Harris Jones, another lobbyist for Penn National; and Bruce Bereano, a lobbyist for the Cloverleaf?Standardbred?Owners? Association, the parent company of the former owner of Rosecroft Raceway.

Google's Project Glass gets some more details

Google Glass

Google's Project Glass has been one of the most anticipated and hyped projects to come out of Google in quite some time. After a rather epic demo the company finally gave us a slightly deeper look at the wearable computer of our (supposed) future. Inside is the usual set of components you'd expect inside any mobile phone. There's a "powerful" CPU and "lots" of RAM (though, there was no mention of specifics) alongside an accelerometer, gyroscope and wireless radios for pulling in data. There's a mic for voice commands, a speaker and a camera, which can also be controlled by the touchpad that lines the side of the wearable device. All of those components sit off to one side, though Google says they're still well balanced and actually lighter than some pairs of sunglasses. The tiny transparent display doesn't actually sit directly in front of your eye. It's slightly above your line of vision, so that it shouldn't interfere with your normal life.

Sergey Brin had three different prototypes on stage -- a light blue pair, a white pair and a black pair -- indicating that personalization and style were a concern. And that's a good thing since Glass is meant to be worn in public. Ultimately Google hopes that the project will be the next step in its quest to make information quickly and universally accessible. The ability to capture images from the first person perspective seems to be key to the device. In a new demo video, a new mother waxes about how hard it is to capture those perfect moments with her child. She "smiles at faces not devices" which makes sticking a D5 in the baby's face a bad idea.

If you're impatient and lucky enough to have been at IO (and live in the US), you can actually pre-order an Explorer Edition of the wearable computer for $1,500. The dev focused units will be shipping early next year. But, be warned, this is not a mass consumer item and will likely be more than a little rough around the edges.

Check out our full coverage of Google I/O 2012's opening keynote at our event hub!

2013 Smart fortwo electric drive | Auto Insurance Information - Yes

Smart fortwo electric drive

12 June 2012 - this date marks the starting signal for the first real alternative to the usual refuelling stops. With the launch of the new smart fortwo electric drive, in future smart customers can enjoy even more fun at the wheel of an attractively priced vehicle that has the familiar compact dimensions - as a coup? or a cabriolet. The most important feature distinguishing it from its siblings with conventional engines is the fact that it does not produce any emissions on the road. With its 55kW electric motor the smart fortwo electric drive accelerates from 0-60 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and with a maximum speed of 125 km/h driving pleasure is also guaranteed on urban motorways. The 17.6 kWh battery enables the urban two-seater to travel approximately 145 kilometres in city traffic without producing any local emissions. The new sale&care model makes opting into electric mobility particularly attractive: it offers customers an opportunity to buy, finance or lease the vehicle at an attractive price and to rent the battery for a monthly fee.

Extensive experience and customer feedback from various electric mobility projects were integrated in the further development of the smart fortwo electric drive. Ever since 1998 the smart has been revolutionising urban mobility like no vehicle before it. Compact, agile, environmentally friendly and stylish - it has evolved from a practical small car to a lifestyle product and has long become a familiar sight on the roads of cities around the world.

From the summer the smart fortwo electric drive will start winning wide-ranging buyers in more than 30 international countries for its innovative and forward-looking drive concept.

Dr. Annette Winkler, Head of smart, says "The smart fortwo was designed for an electric drive right from the start as our customers to date have already been able to experience for themselves in their daily use of this vehicle. We have taken their feedback and wishes very seriously. The new smart fortwo electric drive represents a completely new dimension of zero-emission driving pleasure at a price that is really attractive."

The new model is fitted with a 55 kW magneto-electric motor - the first product from the EM-motive joint venture founded together with Bosch - ensuring that it is as agile and lively as ever.

With torque of 130 Newton metres it accelerates powerfully from 0 to 60 km/h in 4.8 seconds, and thanks to better acceleration in the higher speed range it can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.5 seconds as it has much more tractive power than its predecessor.

This makes for speedy driving and overtaking. The battery-electric two-seater smart fortwo now has a higher top speed of 125 km/h, as well. That is putting it on a par with the combustion-engined smart - also on the motorway.

A battery from the joint venture "Deutsche ACCUmotive" with Evonik Industries is fitted in the new smart fortwo electric drive for the first time. With capacity of 17.6 kWh the lithium-ion battery enables 145 kilometres of pollutant-free driving fun. In addition to the higher battery capacity clear improvements have been made to the efficiency of the drive system, resulting in a greater range. When completely empty it takes a maximum of seven hours to fully charge the battery at a household socket or charging station on the electricity systems of most countries i.e. overnight.

Quick charging in less than one hour

For the feasibility of quick charging it is possible to optionally equip the car with a quick-charging function. The 22 kW on-board charger enables a completely empty battery to be fully charged in less than an hour. A power cable is needed for this which is used to connect the vehicle to a public quick-charging station or a "wallbox" at home or work.

smart will offer this in future in cooperation with SPX, one of the world's leading suppliers of technology solutions in the fields of energy and automotive as a global installation and service partner, and with KEBA, a specialist for innovative E-charging infrastructure and wallboxes. If a customer decides to install a wallbox at home or work the smart Sales department will contact SPX. SPX will examine the local conditions, make an individual offer, and after a purchase decision, arrange for installation of the wallbox from KEBA. The wallbox is standardised and can of course also be used to charge vehicles from other manufacturers, for example if there is a mixed fleet.

There are two different types of wallbox: Basic and Connected. Both variants can be used for the quick charging of a single vehicle, or several vehicles one after the other. For private customers who want to charge up quickly and easily at home, a Basic wallbox is the perfect solution. It provides quick charging up to 22 kW and can be used both indoors and outdoors. The Connected wallbox also provides internet connectivity once linked up to the customer's web connection.

Furthermore, the Connectivity Plus system is an ideal solution for fleet customers. It enables up to 16 Connected wallboxes to be linked up to the "fleet server". This fleet server then enables several vehicles to be charged at once, all controlled intelligently and automatically. For example, certain vehicles can be given priority or a load limitation can be set. SmartCharging is also possible: economical charging and charging with green electricity (if the utility company provides the relevant data). This is financially advantageous to customers as they always have full control over their charging. The relevant charging cables are of course also available from SPX.

Attractive introduction to electric mobility

The smart fortwo electric drive makes opting into electric mobility very attractive with a new marketing concept. With the sale&care model customers can buy, lease or finance the vehicle at an attractive price and rent the battery. The rental costs include regular maintenance and, if necessary, quick battery replacement. smart also has a solution for all those who want to buy the entire vehicle.

In Germany the price for the vehicle with the sale&care model is ?18,910 inc. VAT for the coup? and ?22,000 for the cabrio. As well as this there is the standard battery rental charge of ?65 including VAT in all sale&care markets. In view of the low operating costs electric driving is therefore a very attractive form of individual mobility.

National promotion programmes in many countries and various mobility benefits such as the use of special lanes or exemption from city congestion charges are further advantages of electric driving. With the attractive sale&care package and the significant technological advancement of the smart fortwo electric drive smart offers its customers affordable driving pleasure in daily use based on the environmentally friendly drive.

smart also has an attractive offer for customers who want to buy or lease the complete vehicle with the battery: including VAT the new smart fortwo electric drive costs ?23,680 as a coup? and ?26,770 as a cabrio.

Since the International Motor Show in Frankfurt anyone interested has been able to register on www.smart.com with no obligation to receive all the latest news on the new electric smart. In some markets, including Germany, France, Spain, Italy and the UK customers have been able to make advance reservations for a vehicle online - and these customers will be among the first owners of the new smart fortwo electric drive. A four-figure number of reservations has already been received - and a five-figure number of people have even registered on the smart website.

Fill up on renewable energies

Electric vehicles cut down greenhouse gases on a sustained basis, especially when they are powered by renewably generated electricity. This is why the company is supplying as much additional energy generated by wind power to the German grid as is needed to run all new electric smarts sold in Germany - thus supporting the ambitious climate targets of the EU. The energy needed for this is supplied by a new wind power plant on the A9 motorway, which Daimler has acquired in order to supply additional power generated from a completely renewable source to the grid on time for the launch of the new electric smart. Within the framework of this initiative Daimler is deliberately not taking up support measures from the German Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG). With nominal output of 2.3 megawatts per year the onshore wind energy plant type Enercon E82 will generate enough green electricity to run the approximately 2,500 smart fortwo electric drives initially sold in Germany. Any power required over and above this could also be covered with electricity from wind power, without EEG funding.

A fresh green and even more colours

With a larger radiator grille featuring the electric drive logo, stylish LED daytime driving lights below the headlamps, wider door sills and several modifications to the rear the new model is much more dynamic than its predecessor. The new E-smart comes in all smart colours and colour combinations that are also available for the diesel and petrol models.

The new colour fresh green is a particularly visible manifestation of electric driving fun. The electric drive design package comprises crystal white bodypanels and white alloy rims, tridion cell and mirror caps painted in electric green and numerous green accents in the interior, which form an attractive contrast to the black seats.

Those looking to give their vehicle an even more exclusive touch can choose from the range of options offered by smart BRABUS tailor made - with an even greater choice of colours and materials.

Perfectly equipped

As to be expected the new smart fortwo electric drive features extensive equipment. A highlight is the fully automatic air conditioning with pollen filter and pre-entry climate control. When it is connected to the power supply the vehicle can be automatically pre-cooled or pre-heated as required for a programmed departure time. A new feature is the possibility to start the pre-entry climate control via the internet or a smartphone at any time. The standard equipment furthermore includes electric windows, a leather steering wheel, leather gear knob, the audio system basic, power steering, 9-spoke alloy wheels and a luggage compartment cover. In addition to the standard solid roof, a glass roof and a cabrio version are available. The trip computer - also a standard feature in the electric smart - shows journey information including the remaining range. And like the predecessor model the two round instruments show the battery state-of-charge and the energy used and recuperated. In addition, the smart fortwo electric drive can be equipped with a navigation system and a 3-spoke leather steering wheel.

Clever app for infotainment with smartphones

smart is the first car brand to develop its own drive app for the iPhone?. Together with the smart kit and cradle for the iPhone? the cult phone becomes a multimedia trip computer that is optimised for the smart fortwo in terms of function and design. The smart drive app for the iPhone has all the important features needed whilst driving: phone calls via hands-free system, your own extensive music collection, internet radio and a clever navigation system with a special smart touch. There are also smart extras - for example the Car Finder that will guide you back to wherever you parked your car.

The new smart drive app for the iPhone is simple to operate, for example thanks to extra-large buttons. The new app therefore makes urban mobility even easier and more fun - the declared objective of the smart philosophy.

Two new elements developed by smart make the two-seater car and the iPhone a perfect team:

??? The smart cradle for the iPhone with control unit and microphone serves as a stylish and functional holder. It charges the iPhone and also functions as a hands-free system using the loudspeakers of the smart radio for sound output and automatically muting it when phone calls are made
??? The smart drive app for the iPhone is the world's first drive app on the market to be developed by a car brand. It combines all the features needed on the road in a single app. All the functions are extremely easy to use thanks to extra-large buttons and extra-large letters

Always know how far you can go: connected services

The smart drive app for the iPhone can be supplemented with further functions tailored to the smart fortwo electric drive. However, the current state-of-charge or the SmartCharging charge configuration can also be conveniently controlled and managed via a web portal from a home computer or with any modern smartphone.

The Vehicle Homepage offers every smart fortwo electric drive customer a chance to visualise the range on an interactive map with 3D views.

All the destinations that can be reached with the current battery charge are displayed. The public charging stations within reach can also be seen at a glance. If a desired destination is further away than the available range the Vehicle Homepage can be used to quickly check how long the battery still needs to be charged for to reach it. Among other factors, the depiction of the range considers the topography and the route profile. The intuitive graphic depiction that can be combined with 3D views and satellite images is an attractive feature. Furthermore, the vehicle itself can also become active: information on the charge status and range can be sent by email or Twitter messages for example. The driver is notified as soon as the desired range can be reached with the current charge.

Intelligent charging

The smart fortwo electric drive can be connected to the internet at home via a standard powerline adapter (Homeplug AV) for SmartCharging. After entering the planned departure time in the vehicle or the web portal the vehicle will be fully charged in a battery-saving and economical way. The smart fortwo electric drive also makes charging at public stations easy. With Plug&Charge the vehicle identifies itself as soon as it is plugged into a compatible charging point and the charging process is settled automatically.

"Electric history at smart"

With the start of the first electrically driven test fleet in 2007 in London smart also took on a pioneering role in the area of electric mobility when 100 smart fortwo electric drives took to the roads of the British capital - with great success.

With the introduction of the second generation in 2009 the smart fortwo electric drive was ready to take to the roads. The electrically driven avant-gardiste from Stuttgart was introduced in 18 markets. The objective was to gather as much experience as possible about how customers use and charge electric vehicles. The huge demand exceeded all expectations. Instead of the planned 1000 vehicles more than 2000 smart fortwo electric drives were produced in Hambach. This means that smart has one of the largest fleets of electrically driven vehicles on the roads worldwide and a trove of customer experience and wishes that have been input in the new smart fortwo electric drive.

A higher top speed and better acceleration at speeds above 60 km/h were right at the top of the customers' list of priorities. However, contrary to prevailing opinion the range wasn't the crucial point from the perspective of the test customers. The vast majority of users confirmed the results of surveys which say that people drive approximately 30 to 40 kilometres per day on average in urban areas and they expressed great satisfaction with the range of their smart.

Windows Phone 7.8 update gets shown off

Users of Windows Phone might have felt a bit put out at the news that Windows Phone 8, with all its fancy new features, would not be coming to their hardware ? even the flagship Nokia Lumia 900. But all is not lost: one of the cooler pieces, the customizable start screen, will in fact be coming to older handsets. And Microsoft has just put up a little demo of it on video.

(Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBC Universal, but that doesn't mean we get privileged information about Microsoft's products and services, nor does it influence our opinion of them.)

No doubt it's a cool feature for homescreen customization, more straightforward than Android's widgets and more robust than iOS's... nothing. Most users will be happy to have the extra functionality.

But there's still consternation among purchasers of the much-hyped Lumia 900: many feel it was little more than a bait and switch to sell the device as a top-of-the-line one only to make it obsolete almost instantly with a new OS it can't use. There's truth to that, and Android and iOS customers know the sting of seeing a new version of their favored OS debut with no plans to bring it to older devices.

The update should come to any phone currently running Windows?7.5 "Mango." There's a little more info here at the page for the update, but at the moment there are only a couple features listed, and no date for release.

Celtra Revamps Its Mobile AdCreator With 70+ New Features

adcreator_02Celtra, which offers tools for creating rich media mobile ads, is launching version 3 of its AdCreator today. Co-founder and Chief Product Officer Matevz Klanjsek claims this isn't just an incremental improvement, but rather a "totally different" version of the product, with more than 70 new features and new architecture. Klanjsek and his co-founder/CEO Mihael Mikek gave me a rapid-fire tour of AdCreator 3 yesterday. They emphasized the fact that you can create an ad without doing any coding, and indeed, they pulled something together using the AdCreator's largely drag-and-drop interface. They also touted the fact that AdCreator is completely platform agnostic.

Pittsburgh becoming a college hockey hotbed

PITTSBURGH -- Christian Hanson had the advantage of growing up in a hockey family, and he had options to further his development as a player.

Hanson, who grew up near Pittsburgh, also had an advantage that kids from previous hockey-playing generations in this area didn?t have -- he could stay home. Instead of leaving his family, or having them move to a more traditional hockey region, Hanson played youth hockey for the Pittsburgh Hornets and at a local high school before going to college at Notre Dame.

"It was great," Hanson, whose father Dave played professionally for a decade but is better known for being one of the Hanson brothers in the movie "Slap Shot." "A lot of that is attributed to Mario Lemieux and the boom he created and you?re seeing it now. It is awesome. I talked to people I play with now that had to leave their families when they were 14 to go play at Shattuck [St. Mary?s] or a place like that.

"That is the price you pay for the game you love. I would have done it if it was something I had to do, but being from Pittsburgh and how it is turning into such a hockey hotbed in America, the kids in this area are lucky to be able to stay home."

Hanson, along with fellow Pittsburgh youth hockey alum Matt Bartkowski, were back home Friday to speak to 61 young players from the area at the Reebok College Hockey Summit at 84 Lumber Arena in Neville Township, Pa.

The kids were at the summit to listen to presentations and for question-and-answer sessions with the ex-players, with representatives from College Hockey Inc. and with 17 coaches from the college ranks along with three from the United States Hockey League.

They were also there to play, which offered a scouting opportunity for the coaches.

"Our message is 'come play college hockey,'" Providence coach Nate Leaman said. "It is the reward of more development time, the reward of an education and all of the guys who have gone on to the NHL. It also allows us to go out and view kids in the community and for them to be viewed on the ice by colleges because one of the misperceptions the kids sometimes have is that we?re not watching them and we?re very much out there."

Coaches like Leaman are spending more time recruiting kids from the Pittsburgh area than ever before. Guys from this area have made it to the NHL -- Ryan Malone began a steady stream of Pittsburgh-born kids during the past decade.

The numbers are growing at the youth level; more kids are playing in the USHL, more are ending up at colleges or in the Canadian junior leagues. While the people in charge of this summit obviously want the kids to choose the NCAA route, it is a boon for everyone that there are more kids from this area who are strong enough prospects to have a choice to make.

"Pittsburgh hockey is busting at the seams right now," said Derek Schooley, who has been the coach at Robert Morris since the Colonials started a Division I hockey program. "When I first got here, hockey was kind of in a downward spiral. You didn?t know if the Penguins were going to stay, and the arrival of Sidney Crosby and [Evgeni] Malkin and [Marc-Andre] Fleury and hockey has really taken off. Youth hockey is growing. Pittsburgh is producing more and more players to college, to junior, to all levels. The hockey here is really exploding."

This event coincided with the 2012 NHL Draft being hosted by the Penguins at Consol Energy Arena. The 2011 draft was a breakout class for youth hockey in this area as four players -- J.T. Miller, John Gibson, Brandon Saad and Vincent Trochek -- went in the first 64 selections.

The hockey footprint continues to grow at multiple levels. The Penguins have sold out every game for years and have never been more popular in a town that was once known primarily for its NFL and MLB franchises.

WEAR WHAT THE DRAFTEES WEAR

College hockey is the next level on the verge of a breakout. Robert Morris is a young program, but is much improved and will host the 2013 Frozen Four at Consol Energy Center next spring. Penn State will be the newest program at the Division I level next season, and with that comes another new hockey arena just a couple of hours away.

Toss in Ohio State about three hours west on I-70 and kids from this area have options if they want to stay closer to home and play college hockey.

"Now with colleges like Robert Morris, who has a great Division I program, Ohio State is only three hours away and Penn State is building a state-of-the-art facility, it is going to even more reiterate that Pittsburgh is one of the top-flight places to look for American hockey players," Hanson said.

Added Bartkowski: "One of the factors in me choosing Ohio State was how close to home it was. My parents could come watch my games. I could shoot home for a spring weekend or in the fall for a weekend here or there. Especially with Penn State coming in and that rink they?re going to have, that?s going to really help the area a lot. Then there is the Youngstown team that moved up to the USHL. I can?t see it being much longer before the city gets a junior team again, and that will help boost youth hockey even more."

Farmers forsake intensive confinement systems for more humane models

All Animals magazine July/August 2012

by Karen E. Lange

Though GAP?s just getting started?with standards for eggs still in development and those for dairy and lamb yet to be introduced?farmers are already helping meet the demand. Sale of certified 5-step products is expanding outside of Whole Foods to an increasing number of purveyors. And in less than a year, Whole Foods helped create an alternative to huge, quickly grown broiler chickens, recruiting one or more producers from each region able to offer pasture-raised (Step 4) chickens.

One of those producers is David Pitman. He and the other three farmers profiled in these pages rejected most everything taught in ag school. They searched out alternative models. They took great financial risks, with no guarantee of success. Most of all, they followed their hearts in an environment often driven by the bottom line. People?their neighbors, sometimes their own family members?thought they were crazy. Some still do.

Others say they?re the start of a revolution that will dramatically improve animal welfare. Making the adjustments on larger farms will take time and money?realistically, producers will wait until they have to replace buildings, says Bernard Rollin, a Colorado State University professor who chairs the GAP board and served on the groundbreaking Pew Commission on Industrial Farm Animal Production. Certain expenses, though, may actually be lower: Rollin and another researcher found building barns without sow gestation crates costs up to 20 percent less.

Rejecting the factory farm model doesn't mean rejecting science or technology, says Maxwell. "We can be successful and not go [back] to the Dark Ages."

Rejecting the factory farm model doesn?t mean rejecting science or technology, says Maxwell. ?We can be successful and not go [back] to the Dark Ages,? he says. Though crowding animals inside has been made possible by prolific use of antibiotics, for example, progressive farmers have applied a better understanding of key factors?including respiratory health, adequate ventilation, and disease-specific immunizations?to put animals back on the land and keep them healthy.

Meanwhile, the conditions that made intensive confinement possible?cheap oil, abundant water, a stable climate, a surplus of feed grain?are disappearing, say scholars like Fred Kirschenmann of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University. The scale of today?s mega-farms has actually grown beyond what?s necessary to be efficient, according to a study by Iowa State economist Michael Duffy. The future, says Kirschenmann, lies with what academics call ?the agriculture of the middle??mid-sized farms bigger than the type that sell to farmers markets and CSAs (community-supported agriculture groups), but not so big they have to rely on extreme confinement practices that ignore welfare.?

?What we need to be looking at now [are] the beginning farmers, the farmers who are in their 30s and [40s and] 50s,? he says. ?They don?t want to raise hogs in CAFOs. They want to produce food for people.?

TEEN FICTION: 'Smell Of Heaven'

This is a regular column featuring original poetry and fiction by and for teens, provided by Figment.com, an online community writing site for young people.

By May K. Rebey

I smelled his shirt that he let me wear. It was to prevent my pirate costume from being scandalous, since I had forgotten a white undershirt of my own. As soon as I was alone with it, I brought it to my nose. Never had I smelled anything so fresh, so clean, so sweet as this simple white shirt. How is it that this shirt, that had been on his back for hours, could smell like it had just come out of the dryer? How precious was that shirt, the shirt of the boy I had loved since freshman year.

I met him when I was in the seventh grade. Actually, he and I had gone to the same school since kindergarten, but we didn't become friends until junior high. He, along with his group of friends, opened their arms to me, when my old "friends" left me in the cold, alone. This group of friends, became my world, the source of joy in my life. I was completely and utterly happy. I still am.

Then things started to change. As our bond grew stronger, my heart would beat faster when I was near him. I began want to spend more time with him. I would dream about him. But then, my best friend told me she liked him a lot. Being the loyal friend I was, I backed away, burying my feelings. I almost convinced myself that I didn't like him anymore. Besides, what can an eighth grader do with such emotions? I was too young to date.

Then freshman year struck. That is when I fell hard. I love him. I love him. But who could I tell? My best friend still liked him, and by now, it was obvious that the feelings were mutual. So I kept quiet, simmering in the agonizing silence, always telling myself, Wait until he graduates. Then you can tell him.

I waited. I waited so patiently, always being there for him, even as his passion for her grew stronger. I was there for him. Sophomore year pulls around. She has transferred schools, and subconsciously, he and I grow closer together, trying to fill the void that she left behind. We became the closest we had ever been.

This beautiful friendship means the world to me. All this time, I had been learning what love really means. To sacrifice my wants for his, to support him as he pursued someone else, but always being his friend, even when it hurt.

That is when I realized...I could never tell him. It would only make things weird between us; nothing would ever be the same. She would hate me, and he and I would become estranged. So that is when I resolved to keep simmering in my emotions, enduring the pain, because seeing him so happy only brings me joy.

Today, I was crying from the stress of school and life caving in on me. He came to me, told me to stand up, and he hugged me. There, with my head on his chest, I smelled it. The scent so fresh, so clean, so sweet that was in that shirt that he let me borrow for the play a few weeks before. It was then I realized that it wasn't the scent of laundry soap. It was him. That is when I knew for sure it was what heaven smelled like. Because I knew if I could ever truly be in his arms, to have him whisper in my ear how he loved me, then I would be in Heaven on earth. How taunting is it to be so close to such amazing joy, and yet have it just out of reach. But no matter what, I will be there for him, because he is there for me, in the best way possible, even if it isn't what I think I want. I can still love this Heaven on earth.

Technology Mania: The Proliferation of Mobile Phones

?As I walked down the street while talking on the phone, sophisticated New Yorkers gaped at the sight of someone actually moving around while making a phone call. Remember that in 1973, there weren?t cordless telephones, let alone cellular phones.?

- Martin Cooper, Motorola inventor who placed the first cell phone call

To the question of how mobile phones came to be what they are right now, it can only be credited to the partnership between innovators and consumers, with both parties prodding each other to bring about progress. As innovators developed the wireless technology, consumers pointed out the limitations and presented to them potentials for advancement. As consumers enjoyed the technology on the other hand, innovators inspired them to want more and introduced new standards in the field of communication.?

?

When Martin Cooper placed that first cell phone call while he walked the streets of New York, he invited the people to co-create and co-determine the future of wireless communication. The technology clearly provided a solution to limitations with communications. But instead of being completely satisfied, consumers indirectly threw him another problem to solve, which was bringing the technology to everyone. And that?s how Motorola and the rest of the mobile communications industry set out to make new innovations that spanned for decades.

By the 1990s, the United States as well as the rest of the world has millions of mobile phone subscribers. By this time, everyone was on the 2G technology and mobile phones were digital instead of analog. Wireless networks became much bigger and phones became a lot smaller, lightweight, and portable. After the developments that the mobile phones have also undergone, they became more accessible and affordable to the average-earning consumer.?

?

Mobile phones hasn?t been really a really luxury. People adapted and warmed to the technology because it really offered a lot of benefits. It allowed parents to communicate with their kids while they are away. It allowed teens to talk their friends for updates when they missed school. It basically allowed everyone to connect and communicate each other whenever they want, wherever they are. With the proliferation of mobile phones, information and people became accessible. This in turn made everything else faster, easier, and more accurate. It was a new standard for communication. Everyone was included and nobody can be left behind.

By the mid 1990s, short messaging system was introduced. Because texting was relatively cheaper than talking and was marketed as an entertaining means of connecting with people, more and more people joined in the mobile phone craze. By this time, most members of the household each own their own device. Mobile phone has been successfully commercialized for mass consumption.

Aside from making it a necessity, commercialization made mobile phones fashionable accessory. Phones were already small during this time. Manufacturers made them even more interesting by making them even smaller and introducing other form factors such as the flip, the swivel, and the slide. Though the displays screen this time were still monochrome, mobile phones allowed users customization with fonts, languages, icons, wallpapers, and screen savers. Consumers have more reason to purchase phones and more ways to enjoy them.

Although smartphones were introduced as early as 1992, it eventually became a standard for business oriented people in the early 2000. Smartphones featured full QWERTY keyboard, were bigger and heavier compared to its feature phone counterparts. From being simple communication equipments, mobile phones started functioning like a portable computing devices.?

?

By 2005, mobile phones were already a hybrid of other mobile devices. Phones featured a camera, a music player, and a video recorder. Users can also create full office documents and content with them. By 2009, smartphones were the standard. Users were not just using their mobile phones for communication and creating content, but also for surfing the internet, streaming media, and downloading content.?

?

2011 saw the height of the social media age. Up to the present time, mobile phones are instrumental in connecting people online and in social media networks. It?s inevitable for socially connected people to have their own smartphone. With network providers making it more affordable to connect to the internet, mobile phones have never been more convenient to use.

Mobile phones became what they are now because they evolved with the times. They became what consumers needed them to be. With the work of everyone in the wireless communication and mobile technology industry, they transformed from a simple mobile telephone to a sophisticated hybrid of all other mobile devices you can think of. There?s no telling what the mobile phone will be to us a few years from now, but one thing?s for certain: it will remain essential in everyone?s everyday lives.

Pentax K-30 weather-sealed DSLR hands-on with sample photos and video

Pentax K30 weathersealed DSLR handson with sample photos and video

We can count on one hand the number of times a waterproof camera was the only suitable option for any given photo shoot, but drizzle and even flash monsoons can strike at any moment, especially in some locales. Most clothing and other analog gear can survive such attacks of mother nature nearly unscathed, but smartphones and cameras are another story altogether -- unless they're coated in head-to-toe weather sealing, of course. Pentax may not be a top player in any digital imaging category, but the company does have a few serious DSLR contenders, and should be taken seriously for anyone in the market for a new ILC. The manufacturer's latest swappable-lens model, the K-30, is quite a respectable beast, and a fairly solid value at $900 with an 18-55mm kit lens. Beneath that steel and polycarbonate black housing there's a 16.3-megapixel APS-C sensor with shift-based stabilization, a 100-percent FOV optical viewfinder, a color-adjustable 921k-dot 3-inch LCD and a bevy of manual control options, for stills and video alike.

We put the K-30 through its paces during a half-day shoot around NYC. There was no rain, sand or snow in sight, but the brutal heat and humidity didn't take any toll, with the camera offering consistent performance and excellent battery life for hours on end (we captured nearly 700 stills with live view and a few minutes of video with plenty to spare, and you can also swap in four AA lithiums for up to 1600 shots). We spend much of our time shooting with mirrorless cameras these days, but when absolute portability is less critical, there are obvious benefits to lugging around a full-size DSLR like the K-30. The camera was able to shoot with perfect exposure and white balance in almost every situation and images captured with the 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 kit lens were sharp and vibrant. Video performance was sufficient as well -- most of our clips were captured at 720/30p, but 720/60p and 1080/30p are also on offer. Focus wasn't the fastest we've seen (the Olympus E-M5 still holds the title), but the lens adjusted accurately even in low light, especially when aided by the green illuminator.

High-ISO performance didn't blow us away with noise reduction deactivated -- noise was visible at a 25-percent view at ISO 12,800 and a 12.5-percent view at the ISO 25,600 extended setting, but the sensor-shift stabilization mode enabled us to capture sharp handheld shots at 1/40 second, so it's not terribly difficult to avoid venturing into that high-sensitivity zone. Pentax also added a unique Astrotracer mode, which moves the sensor precisely for long night-sky exposures, using an optional GPS module to provide location and direction information (there was no way to test this feature in NYC, where the city lights never sleep). We did have a chance to test out that weather sealing, however -- the camera functioned just as well while under a running water fountain as it did on dry land. Overall, we were quite impressed with the K-30 -- it's one of the best sub-$1,000 DSLRs we've used to date, and if you've made an investment in Pentax KAF2 glass (or you're ready to load up now), you can expect to be pleased. Body identified as that of Irish soccer fan

BYDGOSZCZ, Poland (AP) ? A body found floating in a Polish canal has been identified by a family member as that of an Irish soccer fan who came to the country for the European Championship, an official said.

Deputy chief prosecutor Wlodzimierz Marszalkowski told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the family member confirmed the identity of the body as James Nolan, who went missing early Sunday in the northern city of Bydgoszcz. He would not identify the family member, but said it was a close relation.

Documents in Nolan's name were found on the corpse. Marszalkowski said an autopsy would be held on Thursday to establish cause of death.

James Nolan, 21, of Blessington, County Wicklow, disappeared early Sunday in the northern city of Bydgoszcz, sparking a huge search effort in the city. Police divers found a body early Wednesday and authorities were awaiting the arrival of Nolan's father, Jimmy, and other family members later to make a formal identification.

"There is a high probability that this is the body of the man we have been searching for," a spokesman for prosecutors, Jan Bednarek, told AP.

The body was found lying face down in fast-flowing water of the Bydgoszcz Canal and trapped by a weir that runs across it. The canal is an offshoot of the city's Brda River, and brings water for a small hydroelectric plant.

No signs of violence were apparent, Marszalkowski said. Robbery didn't appear to be the motive since 600 zlotys ($200) and a credit card were found on the corpse, he said. An autopsy was planned for Thursday.

The clothing on the body matched a description given by friends of what Nolan was wearing when he went missing, Marszalkowski said.

Police and firefighters, some in boats and others with dogs, had been searching along the river, canal and adjacent waste ground Tuesday and again on Wednesday. Moments before the body was found, two divers in an inflatable dinghy were seen speeding toward the site. A police cordon was quickly set up around the area, which is near a museum and a church.

In a sign of mourning, someone later placed two white candles near the place where the body was found.

Nolan was in Poland for Euro 2012 to follow Ireland, which has now been eliminated from the soccer tournament. He had been traveling with friends in a rented camper van, but was also registered at a hotel on the city's outskirts.

He was last seen visiting local bars after watching televised games in a fan zone Saturday night.

Two of Nolan's travel companions, 22-year-old Aidan Willoughby and 24-year-old Adam Cullen, described him as a "smiley, outgoing person with a very witty sense of humor" and known by the nickname "Jam."

Their group of seven arrived in Bydgoszcz on Saturday to meet with other Irish friends. They watched the Poland-Czech game in town and then went into a market square pub around midnight.

"There we enjoyed drinks with the locals, who had been extremely friendly all night," Nolan's friends said in a statement.

"Around 2 a.m., a member of the group (not James) was involved in a minor altercation with a small group of local men sitting in the bar," the statement said. "The minor altercation ended in a matter of seconds and all involved and the rest of our group remained in the pub. Shortly afterwards, we decided to leave the bar as a number of the group wanted to go home and others went to find a nightclub.

"It appears that Jam left the group or pub alone prior to this. When Jam failed to return to the hotel by late morning and was not contactable, we became extremely concerned and members of the group contacted local police at 2:30 p.m. Others drove and walked around the city area looking for him and contacted hospitals."

RolePlayGateway is a site built by a couple roleplayers who wanted to give a little something back to the roleplay community. The site has no intention of earning any profit, and is paid for out of their own pockets.

If you appreciate what they do, feel free to donate your spare change to help feed them on the weekends. After selecting the amount you want to donate from the menu, you can continue by clicking on PayPal logo.
