Government cash to promote Atlantic Canada as cruise destination

Federal and provincial funding announced Monday will help promote Atlantic Canada as a premier cruise destination, industry partners said.

The investment of $1.14 million over three years for the Atlantic Canada Cruise Association renews a previous agreement.

The money will help support the implementation of an industry-wide marketing strategy through 2014.

The federal government is investing $350,000 in the initiative, while partnership ports, provincial tourism departments and cruise ship interests in each of the Atlantic provinces are providing the remaining balance of funding.

?Our region?s cruise industry continues to grow thanks to the strategic marketing initiatives undertaken through the association,? said Betty MacMillan, association chairwoman, in a news release.

?The strong partnership that has been formed between governments, ports throughout Atlantic Canada and industry stakeholders has played a large role in creating the environment in which the cruise industry can continue to be successful.??
