Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips will interview with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their open head coach position, the Houston Chronicle reported on Sunday.
According to the Chronicle?s John McClain, the Texans gave the Buccaneers permission to interview Phillips, which will reportedly happen on Friday.
Houston?s defense has made a dramatic turnaround from 2010 in Phillips? first season, ranking second in yards allowed per game.
When asked earlier this week, linebacker Brian Cushing said Phillips? importance to the team can?t be overstated.
?He?s been huge,? Cushing said. ?For what he?s done in turning this defense around has been unbelievable. So much credit goes to him, from scheme, to coaches he?s brought to just the personality of the team.?
Phillips has been a head coach at the NFL level three times. He went 16-16 as the Broncos head coach in 1993 and 1994, 29-19 as the Bills head coach from 1998-2000 and 34-22 as the Cowboys head coach from 2007-2010. He was also an interim head coach for four games with the Saints in 1985 and for three games with the Falcons in 2003.
The Texans, who beat Cincinnati 31-10 in the franchise?s first-ever playoff game, will play the Baltimore Ravens in the divisional round on Sunday at 12 p.m.
