(Crain's) ? Laura Thrall, president and CEO of United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, has stepped down from the non-profit.
The agency says Ms. Thrall, 51, is taking medical leave, but no further details were disclosed. Her departure was announced today, but it took effect Dec. 31.
Wendy DuBoe, 47, the organization's chief operating officer, will become interim CEO.
"It was a personal decision," Ellen Costello, chairman of United Way Metropolitan Chicago's board and CEO of BMO Financial Corp., told Crain's. Given the holidays, "we made a joint decision not to announce it until people were back in the office."
Ms. Thrall said in a press release that it had been a "privilege and pleasure" serving the United Way.
She joined the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago in 2009, coming from the YWCA Metropolitan Chicago, where she was CEO.
While at United Way, Ms. Thrall launched the agency's 10-year "Live United 2020" plan and reduced operating expenses
United Way's revenues have been largely flat over the past several years, but under Ms. Thrall, the organization's 2010 campaign raised $53 million, up from $52 million the prior year ? a significant accomplishment during a troubled economy, Ms. Costello said.
Ms. Thrall has led the organization "to its present strong position, and on behalf of the board, I want to thank Laura for her hard work and valuable contributions," Ms. Costello said in a press release
United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, the second-largest provider of financial assistance to human service agencies after the state of Illinois, distributes funds to more than 200 agencies in the area.
