Specific gene linked to cold sore susceptibility, study finds

ScienceDaily (Oct. 28, 2011) ? Investigators have identified a human chromosome containing a specific gene associated with susceptibility to herpes simplex labialis (HSL), the common cold sore. Published in The Journal of Infectious Diseases and now available online, the study looks at how several genes may affect the severity of symptoms and frequency of this common infection. The findings, if confirmed, could have implications for the development of new drugs to treat outbreaks.

HSL outbreaks, or cold sores, are skin infections that appear with the reactivation of herpes simplex virus, a virus that infects 70 percent of the U.S. population. Cold sore outbreaks vary in frequency and severity; some people may experience symptoms rarely, only once every 5 to 10 years, while others may experience them once a month or even more frequently. In addition to investigating environmental activating factors (e.g., sunlight) that may play a role in outbreaks, researchers for some time have been looking at the possible role of genetic factors in virus susceptibility and activation.

This study, led by John D. Kriesel, MD, and colleagues from the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City and the University of Massachusetts Medical School in Worcester, follows previous studies identifying a region of chromosome 21 as a base for genes possibly linked to cold sore outbreaks. To identify which of six possible genes in this region were associated with the frequency of outbreaks, this latest study used single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping in genome-wide, family-based linkage studies of 618 people from 43 large families. The investigators found a positive link between the frequency of outbreaks, hereditability, and the presence of a specific gene, C21orf91, on chromosome 21.

"While these findings await confirmation in a larger, unrelated population," the study authors note, "these findings could have important implications for the development of new drugs that affect determinants of the cold sore phenotype."

In an accompanying editorial, Anthony L. Cunningham, MD, and David Booth, MD, of the Centre for Virus Research and the Institute of Immunology and Allergy Research at Westmead Millennium Institute and the University of Sydney in Australia, note that if the findings regarding the C21orf91 gene are confirmed, additional research may then begin to determine possible therapeutic applications and whether the same gene also plays a role in recurring genital herpes.

Mythical snow-white N9 spotted at Nokia World

Is it possible to improve on something as minutely refined as the Nokia N9 simply by adding another color variant? Well, that depends on what color we?re talking about. Sure, we already have black, cyan, and magenta, but what we?ve been missing -- until now -- is white. Plain, simple, ethereal white. It happens to be one of the hardest hues for a manufacturer to pull off without making a handset look tacky, or making its surface susceptible to the general grubbiness of everyday life. But Nokia did a smart thing: it added a glossy coating that completely changes the look and feel of the device. Take a look for yourself in the gallery below. But bear in mind that the midnight blue disco lights at Nokia World didn't quite do it justice.

Key excerpts from Steve Jobs' biography (Reuters)

REUTERS ? A new biography of late Apple Inc co-founder Steve Jobs hit book-shelves on Monday, offering arguably the most comprehensive, insightful look to date at the life and times of the revered technology visionary.

Below are key excerpts from the tome, penned by Walter Isaacson, relating to Apple and Jobs' sometimes stormy, often difficult relationship with Silicon Valley, partners and rivals, and how Jobs communicated his key business beliefs.

JOBS' RESIGNATION AS CEO:

Jobs was wheeled into a board meeting on August 24, 2011, the day he handed Apple's reins to Tim Cook.

As Jobs' health deteriorated, he wrestled with the decision for weeks, discussing it with his wife, board member Bill Campbell, design chief Jonathan Ive and attorney George Riley.

When he finally made up his mind, arrangements were made to have him driven to 1 Infinite Loop and wheeled into the boardroom as secretly as possible.

"One of the things I wanted to do for Apple was to set an example of how do you transfer power right," Jobs told Isaacson. He added later that evening that his hope was to remain as active as his health allowed.

MAKING AN ENEMY OUT OF GOOGLE INC:

Isaacson's account of Jobs' blow-up over Google's entry into the smartphone market underscores the subsequent animosity he bore toward former Apple board member Eric Schmidt.

Jobs felt betrayed because Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin had treated him very much as a mentor. In 2008, he got into a shouting match with the pair, as well as with Android chief Andy Rubin, at Google's headquarters.

Jobs had offered Google an icon or two on the iPhone's home page; but in January 2010, HTC released a phone with multi-touch and other iPhone-like features that prompted Jobs to sue.

"Our lawsuit is saying, 'Google, you f***ing ripped off the iPhone, wholesale ripped us off.' Grand theft. I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I'm willing to go to thermonuclear war on this," Jobs told Isaacson the week after the suit was filed.

"They are scared to death, because they know they are guilty. Outside of Search, Google's products -- Android, Google Docs -- are s***."

Schmidt met with Jobs for coffee days later, but Jobs remained enraged and nothing was resolved.

"We've got you red-handed," Jobs told Schmidt. "I'm not interested in settling. I don't want your money, If you offer me $5 billion, I won't want it. I've got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android."

ON APPLE'S INTEGRATED APPROACH:

Jobs' infuriation stemmed partly from a fundamental conflict between Android's open-source approach and his own belief in a closed, carefully controlled ecosystem.

"We do these things not because we are control freaks," he said.

Addressing users' concerns, he said: "They are busy doing whatever it is they do best, and they want us to do what we do best. Their lives are crowded; they have other things to do than think about how to integrate their computers and devices."

"Look at the results -- Android's a mess .... We do it not to make money. We do it because we want to make great products, not crap like Android."

FLASH TIRADE GOT PERSONAL

Jobs' well-known tirade against Adobe Systems Inc's Flash multimedia software may have had its roots in the 1980s. Apple had invested in Adobe in 1985 and they collaborated to popularize desktop publishing.

But in 1999, Jobs -- after returning to Apple -- had asked Adobe to make its video-editing software available for the new iMac but the company refused, focusing instead on Microsoft Windows. Soon after, founder John Warnock retired.

"I helped put Adobe on the map," Jobs told Isaacson. "The soul of Adobe disappeared when Warnock left. He was the inventor, the person I related to. It's been a bunch of suits since then, and the company has turned out crap."

APPLE'S CONTROL OVER APPS, AND CENSORSHIP

Isaacson describes an exchange with Ryan Tate, editor of the tech gossip site Valleywag, that offers glimpses into Jobs' steadfast belief in carefully curating the types of applications available for downloading on the iPhone.

Tate emailed Jobs decrying Apple's heavy-handedness and asked: "If (Bob) Dylan was 20 today, how would he feel about your company .... Would he think the iPad had the faintest thing to do with 'revolution'? Revolutions are about freedom."

According to Tate, Jobs replied after midnight: "Yep ... freedom from programs that steal your private data. Freedom from programs that trash your battery. Freedom from porn. Yep, freedom. The times they are a changin', and some traditional PC folks feel like their world is slipping away. It is."

When Tate mentioned pornography was just fine with him and his wife, Jobs got snarky. "You might care about porn when you have kids. ... By the way, what have you done that's so great? Do you create anything, or just criticize others' work and belittle their motivations."

Tate told Isaacson he was impressed by Jobs' willingness to spar one-on-one with bloggers and customers.

ANTENNAGATE ... AND REED

"Antennagate" -- a faulty iPhone 4 antenna design that caused occasional dropped calls -- received a mountain of publicity, and Jobs came out publicly to acknowledge the mistake and announce a fix. But one little-known incident came to light in Isaacson's book.

Jobs, alerted to the possible defect while in Hawaii, first became defensive, then anguished in a conversation with director Art Levinson. Jobs brushed him off. But where Levinson failed, then-COO Tim Cook prevailed -- by quoting someone as saying Apple was becoming the new Microsoft.

"Let's get to the bottom of this," Jobs apparently said the next day. After reviewing AT&T Inc data, he realized there was indeed a problem and flew back from Hawaii, while marshaling his defenses: public relations guru Regis McKenna, admen Lee Clow and James Vincent -- and his son Reed, then a high-school senior.

"I'm going to be in meetings 24/7 for probably two days and I want you to be in every single one because you'll learn more in those two days than you would in two years at business school," Jobs said he told his son. "You're going to be in the room with the best people in the world making really tough decisions and get to see how the sausage is made."

THE NEW 'SPACESHIP' HQ PLAN:

Jobs' wanted a showcase headquarters, something that no West Coast technology company had, according to the biography. To achieve that, Jobs hired the architectural firm of Norman Foster, which he considered to be the best in the world.

The final design resembled a spaceship, a four-story, circular building with a massive interior courtyard on a 150-acre piece of landscaped land. The design was finalized after multiple iterations as Jobs got very involved in the planning, both in the vision and details.

Foster's firm assigned 50 architects to the team, and every three weeks throughout 2010 they showed Jobs revised models and options, Isaacson wrote.

The building was initially shaped like a winding race-track made of three joined semicircles around a large central courtyard. But when Jobs showed off the design to Reed, the teenager joked that the aerial view reminded him of male genitalia. While Jobs dismissed his remarks as reflecting the mind-set of a teenager, he did mention it to the architects.

"Unfortunately, once I've told you that, you're never going to be able to erase that image from your mind," he said.

The shape was then modified to a simple circle.

Bulgarians to elect new president, mayors (AP)

SOFIA, Bulgaria ? The candidate of Bulgaria's ruling center-right party, Rosen Plevneliev, is favored to win in Sunday's presidential elections that test the government's popularity and the EU nation's ability to overcome concerns about vote-buying and corruption.

Voting was slow Sunday morning, with only 19 percent of the 6.9 million eligible voters casting their ballots by noon, the MBMD opinion research agency said.

Bulgaria's economic woes have been the key campaign issue, with the opposition accusing incumbents of stalling key reforms. The country will get a new president and heated mayoral battles are expected in many of the 264 municipalities.

International observers have already voiced concerns, however, about the fairness of Sunday's elections, and any fraudulent voting could deal a blow to Bulgaria's hopes of getting into Europe's passport-free Schengen travel zone. The EU so far has refused to include Bulgaria due to what it called widespread graft.

"There are fears about large-scale vote buying and manipulations in the counting of the ballots," the OSCE monitoring team said.

Graft watchdog Transparency International predicted that as many as 20 percent of the voters in the EU's poorest country could be persuaded to sell their ballots.

Most power in Bulgaria rests with the prime minister and Parliament, but the president leads the armed forces and can veto legislation and sign international treaties.

Bulgaria's current socialist president, Georgi Parvanov, has served two five-year terms and was barred from seeking re-election.

Parvanov admitted he has not succeeded in his quest for national unification, and pointed out that the current campaign has gone too far in creating confrontations that should have been dealt with a long time ago in people's minds.

"I hope elections will bring about a better future for the country, as well as for every single Bulgarian," he said.

Former Construction Minister Plevneliev is tipped by all polls as the front-runner with about 30 percent of the vote.

But opinion polls have indicated that none of the 18 presidential candidates is likely to win outright, requiring a runoff on Oct. 30.

The 47-year-old technocrat is supported by the governing GERB party of Prime Minister Boiko Borisov. An entrepreneur before entering politics in 2009, Plevneliev has pledged to reduce the country's budget deficit and pursue business-friendly policies.

"I know what to do about Bulgaria, the regions and the economy so it can be a respectable member of Europe, a respectable member of the world," Plevneliev said after casting his ballot.

A victory by Plevneliev could increase the chances that Borisov's minority center-right government pushes ahead with painful economic reforms in a country with an average monthly salary of euro350 ($485) and 11.7 percent unemployment. One labor union estimates that 20 percent of Bulgarian families are impoverished.

Plevneliev's closest rivals are Ivailo Kalfin, 47, of the opposition Socialist Party, and independent Meglena Kuneva, 54, a former European Union commissioner.

Pujols hits 3 HRs to lead 16-7 rout of Rangers (AP)

ARLINGTON, Texas ? First, Alexi Ogando watched Albert Pujols circle the bases. Then, Michael Gonzalez. And finally, Darren Oliver.

Pujols joined Babe Ruth and Reggie Jackson as the only players to hit three home runs in a World Series game, tying records with five hits and six RBIs to lead the Cardinals to a 16-7 rout of the Texas Rangers on Saturday night.

Just like last year, the Rangers trail 2-1 in the best-of-seven championship. Only last season, they gritted out a morale-boosting 4-2 win over San Francisco in Game 3 before losing two in a row.

"It was just one of those days," Oliver said. "Every game is a must-win. We didn't get it done today, need a win tomorrow. There's no doubt."

Two days after being criticized for his silence following a crucial ninth-inning error in Game 2, Pujols did the talking with his bat. The three-time NL MVP turned on a 96 mph pitch from Ogando in the sixth for a 423-foot, three-run homer that clanked off the facing above the restaurant windows in left field and made it 11-6. He added a two-run shot to left-center in the seventh and a solo drive to left-center in the ninth.

"I didn't walk into the ballpark today thinking that I was going to have a night like this," Pujols said. "Just pretty special, you know, but at the same time, you need to enjoy this for a minute and be ready to play tomorrow."

Pujols set a Series record with 14 total bases. He was 0 for 6 in the first two games.

"When Pujols is at the plate, that's the first time he did damage. We fought back pretty good, the next thing you know he's up there batting with guys on base and brings them in," Oliver said. "That's what he does. That's why he's the hitter he is."

Former President George W. Bush and Rangers CEO Nolan Ryan looked dismayed, watching from front-row seats. Ryan must have felt a temptation to head out to the mound and throw a few pitches in hopes of restoring order.

"He's a great hitter. You can't take that from him," Gonzalez said. "But the thing is, when you miss location to good hitters, they're going to take advantage of your mistakes."

Pujols matched the three-homer feat accomplished by a pair of Yankees Hall of Famers: Ruth against the Cardinals in Game 4 in 1926 and Game 4 in 1928, and Jackson against the Dodgers in Game 6 in 1977.

"It's pretty special. Those guys are great players, and to do it at that level and on this stage is amazing," Pujols said.

He matched the hits record set by Milwaukee's Paul Molitor in the 1982 opener against the Cardinals, and the six RBIs equaled the Yankees' Bobby Richardson in Game 3 in 1960 and Hideki Matsui in Game 6 two years ago.

Losing pitcher Matt Harrison, Scott Feldman, Ogando, Gonzalez, Mark Lowe and Oliver combined to give up 15 hits, three more than the Cardinals had in the first two games. St. Louis set a franchise postseason scoring record, overcoming a short start by Kyle Lohse and getting a win for reliever Lance Lynn.

After getting past Detroit slugger Miguel Cabrera in the AL championship series, Rangers manager Ron Washington is now dealing with Pujols.

"Between him and Cabrera you need to outlaw them. They're just that good," Washington said. "The guy just got locked in after his first at-bat tonight ? two singles. And I thought we had him put away. Next thing you know the ball is up in the third deck."

And the Rangers' infield almost erred for the cycle, with first baseman Mike Napoli, second baseman Ian Kinsler and shortstop Elvis Andrus all making miscues. Napoli, playing at first base for the second time in the postseason, made a bad throw home that led to two runs in the fourth, when St. Louis scored four times for a 5-0 lead.

"Why would I have to make a change at first base?" Washington said. "I think any baseball player in the world could have made that bad throw, not just because it was Napoli. We'll see tomorrow."

First base umpire Ron Kulpa, who grew up in St. Louis, blew a call on what should have been a double-play grounder, calling Matt Holliday safe despite Napoli grabbing Kinsler's off-line throw and tagging Holliday's shoulder. After seeing a replay, Kulpa acknowledged after the game that he made a mistake.

St. Louis allowed Texas to close to 5-3 in the bottom half as Michael Young hit a solo homer and Nelson Cruz a two-run drive to chase Lohse. The Cardinals opened an 8-3 advantage in the fifth, but the Rangers closed to 8-6 in the bottom of the inning and had the bases loaded when Kinsler hit an inning-ending popup.

Texas is 4 for 16 with runners in scoring position, and Josh Hamilton is wincing. The reigning AL MVP went 1 for 5 and dropped to 1 for 11 (.083) in the Series, although he stopped an 0-for-18 Series skid dating to last year with a fifth-inning single.

Hamilton, who said before the game his groin injury may be a sports hernia, is homerless in 53 at-bats during this year's postseason.

Now a lot of the pressure falls on Derek Holland, who starts Game 4 for the Rangers on Sunday night, with Edwin Jackson going for the Cardinals. Thirty-six of 54 teams that won Game 3 to take a 2-1 Series lead have gone on to the title, including 10 of the last 11.

"It doesn't matter to me how many runs they scored. A win's a win, a loss is a loss," Young said. "It could have been the same exact score as the first two games. So we'll come back ready to win tomorrow, even up the series."

NOTES: St. Louis has scored first in 10 consecutive games, one shy of the postseason record set by Detroit from 1972-84. ... Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki, wearing a blue No. 41 Texas Rangers jersey, threw the ceremonial first pitch to Young. ... Baseball and Fox abandoned their one-year experiment with an earlier Saturday night start, beginning at 8:06 p.m. EDT instead of 7 p.m. Texas' 4-2 win over San Francisco in Game 3 last year, the earliest-starting Series game since 1987, drew a 6.7 rating and 13 share, the second-lowest ever for a Series game, ahead of only the rain-delayed Game 3 between Philadelphia and Tampa Bay in 2008, which drew a 6.1. ... Adrian Beltre had four hits and is batting .538 (7 for 13) in the Series. ... The fourth and fifth innings alone dragged on for 1 hour, 22 minutes. The teams combined for a Series-record 17 runs in the middle three innings, six more than the previous mark, and the 23 runs overall were the third-most in a Series game, trailing Toronto's 15-14 victory over Philadelphia in 1993 and Florida's 14-11 win over Cleveland in 1997.

'Occupy' protesters find allies among the wealthy

The ?Occupy Wall Street? protesters ? also known as the ?99 percent? ? have struck a chord with at least a few members of an unexpected audience: America?s rich and privileged.

United under the banner ?We are the 1 percent: We stand with the 99 percent,? a band of entrepreneurs, trust fund babies, professionals and inheritors has taken to the web to share their abhorrence of corporate greed and support for tax code changes that would see them pay a higher share of their considerable wealth.

Among other things, they?re posting their stories on a Tumblr page created by Wealth for the Common Good and Resource Generation, two groups dedicated to working for "fair taxation and just wealth distribution."

Some are probably not actually in the top 1 percent wealthwise ? calculated at earning a yearly salary of more than $506,000, according toThe Wall Street Journal? but all are certainly well off and supportive of reforms that would narrow the widening gap between America's elite and poorest citizens.

Msnbc.com contacted some of the posters and others affiliated with the website?s creators to hear what they had to say. Here, in their own words, is what they told us:

Farhad A. Ebrahimi, 33, who shares his inherited wealth through a charity that he founded, says he attends the Occupy Boston protest every day. He has donated tents, helped with organizing, raised funds and written for the protesters' blog. He said that his inheritance put him squarely in the top 1 percent, plus he makes enough on investment income every year to be in the highest tax bracket. But he lives what he calls a ?Spartan? life compared to other members of his family.

At the protest, he often wears a homemade T-shirt that reads: ?I?m a member of the 1 percent and I fully support the 99 percent? on the front, and, ?Tax me, I?m good for it,? on the back.

Why are you at Occupy Boston?

?I think my taxes are at a historical low ? and also, I think that the ability for someone like me who has financial privilege to influence our government is at an all-time high. I?ve never been comfortable with those ideas. They?ve always seemed like to me things that should change and to ... play a role in the movement and to try to advocate around those issues was just a tremendous opportunity.?

What specific changes would you like to see?

?The big picture for me personally is any sort of restructuring, any demands that can be met that make our tax code more progressive. So campaign finance reform in general would be another one, to make the ability for money ? whether it?s personal or corporate ? to play a role in politics, anything that diminishes that would be on my list of goals to see out of this movement.?

What kind of role can 1 percenters play in a movement of the 99 percent?

?Participating in any way that does not directly involve my privilege. ? And I think one of the things I find very compelling about the occupation (movements) is that by practicing direct democracy through the general assemblies every day, we?re essentially trying to practice what we preach and trying to make decisions as a group, where various kinds of privilege don?t have the sort of outside influence that they have in society as a whole.?

?... I think for me it?s very important to be visible and it?s very important that everybody there be comfortable with the idea of somebody like me being there. So far I?ve received nothing but positive feedback for being sort of honest and transparent about that.?

Insider out: One man's journey from the front office to 'occupier'

Burke Stansbury, a 35-year-old communications specialist for nonprofit groups, has been loosely involved with the protests in Washington, D.C. (known as Occupy K St), donating homemade food, tarps and money. He inherited a little more than $1 million and stands to inherit more. He doesn't believe he officially qualifies to be in the top 1 percent, but says he grew up with all the advantages of being wealthy.

Why did you get involved with the 'Occupy' protests?

"I think it?s a beautiful movement of people that really gets at the heart of what's wrong with our country right now in terms of the really obscene level of inequality that exists and the institutions that have sort of influenced that."

What would you like changed?

"A lot of us have honed in on the tax code piece as something that?s tangible, that can be changed and we have a kind of unique role in speaking out on, as people in the 1 percent. So certainly I feel really strongly that people with wealth, high income people, should be taxed at higher levels and not just in terms of income tax but in terms of the ... capital gains tax as well."

You said you worked with your parents to start a foundation and have given money to nonprofits and grassroots groups. Can't the wealthiest Americans make a difference that way?

"It's all well and good that we maybe have family foundations for giving away a lot of money ourselves to good causes, but that?s not enough, like that isn't going to change the big problems, the really extreme inequality that exists. ? It has to come from the government, it has to be a sort-of involuntary ... redistribution of wealth because the few altruistic wealthy people giving (away) their money isn't going to do it."

Were other protesters aware of your status?

"I don?t go around telling everyone, 'I'm a millionaire.' But I'm also pretty and fairly open about it if it comes up. A lot of people have signs, you know, targeting the 1 percent, oftentimes really angry messages. ... I don?t think people would like jump up and attack me, but I think I would just want to be able to like really talk through it with them and explain what that means to me and have that conversation."

"... I think it?s a great opportunity to kind of bridge that class divide and it?s going to hopefully lead to great things in terms of building a bigger movement.?

What role do you think the 1 percenters can play here in this movement?

"We can bring this message that like there is still collective humanity in those that have more wealth, too. Many of us actually want to see the same kind of change that the people that are down on ... 'Occupy Wall Street' everyday, want to see."

Old guard back in the trenches at 'Occupy' protests

Elspeth Gilmore, a 33-year-old co-director at Resource Generation, said she made waves when she went down to Occupy Wall Street with her sign. Gilmore, who believes she is close to qualifying as a 1 percenter and was raised in a life of privilege, helped launch the Tumblr page last week.

What is the idea behind the 1 percenter site?

?The Tumblr site was our response as Resource Generation and Wealth for the Common Good, who have been collaborating around what it looks like to organize and mobilize young people in the 1 percent to stand with the 99 percent. ... The Tumblr blog was following the lead of the We Are the 99 Percent blog to actually tell our stories and show that there are both young people in our community ? but then also a broader community of people in the 1 percent ? who are standing in support and are working for a world of economic equity and a just distribution of wealth.?

Who are the 1 percent?

?What we?re talking about when we say the 1 percent is that we?re ? part of the population that has more than we need, that has access to resources,? she said. ?It?s more of a framing of what does it look like to be in a place where the majority of people in the country are not ? getting enough to live well and are struggling and what does it mean for those of us who are actually supposedly benefiting from society but actually ... believe that we would all be better off in a world with a more equitable distribution of resources and of wealth.?

"One of the solutions that we support is taxing the rich and changing tax policy, and saying there is more than enough money for all of us. We stand with the demands of the 99 percent ? this is the betterment for all of us.?

"A number of people came up to me and said, 'Hey, I love your sign, and ? that?s me.?"

"... For me being open and public about being wealthy ? is a huge part of me being able to be fully in this movement. ... if I can affect other people who have money to be able to be open and honest about that, they?re going to be so much more effective in making change you know for the next many years ??

Photoblog: Who is occupying Wall Street? Not just your average Joe

Leah Hunt-Hendrix, a 28-year-old Ph.D. student of political theory at Princeton, said she has attended the "Occupy Wall Street" general assemblies and helped to form one of their many working groups. She believes her family would be at the upper end of the 1 percent, though she has chosen to live in a modest apartment in Brooklyn and doesn't see their wealth as a main part of her identity.

How involved are you in Occupy Wall Street?

?I go pretty regularly. I?m still not sure what my best role (is) ? I think I will probably want to write about the movement."

Why did you get involved?

?I've been concerned about the role of corporations in American politics for a long time and so I went down originally to see if the people at 'Occupy' were also talking about a constitutional amendment or (revocation of) corporate personhood as ? a possible demand. But the more I went down, the more I realized that they?re really on target to not have any specific demand. I think this will lead to ? policy changes. But I think that they are right to wait and let the movement grow ? before choosing anything too specific.?

Do you consider yourself a 1 percenter?

?I personally don?t have a large income because I have chosen not to pursue anything that makes money. I think the point is ? that there are people who are immensely privileged and there are people who are suffering terribly. I think that this movement should involve everyone ? like 100 percent.?

What role do you think the 1 percenters can play?

?I think definitely show our solidarity ? (and) we can help fund it. I think we can also help represent the fact that it?s not about good people versus bad people ? there are people trying to work for change on both sides."

Were you ?out? as a wealthy person at 'Occupy Wall Street'?

?I am more of an activist in general and that?s more of my identity so that?s how I went down there.?

?... If I went down and said I have a lot of money, you know, I?d like to help, I don?t think anybody would care and they might be very suspicious. ? I think (in) the movement, as far as I can tell, people are very concerned about where funding comes from and don?t want any money that would tie them to any donors.?

DirecTV may pull plug on Fox channels

A dispute has broken out between News Corp-owned Fox Networks and DirecTV Group, the largest U.S. satellite TV provider, over carriage fees that could potentially lead to DirecTV pulling the plug on Fox channels from Nov 1.

"(Fox) are currently asking our customers to pay 40 percent more for the exact same Fox channels that they already receive and that is simply unfair and unwarranted," DirecTV said in a statement.

Fox said in a statement that the company had proposed to keep the Fox Networks on DirecTV for the same price and on the same terms while an agreement is worked out.

Scott Grogin, a spokesman for Fox Networks, said the company is still negotiating with DirecTV.

DirecTV said it will be forced to suspend Fox channels as soon as Nov. 1 unless News Corp is willing to move toward a more reasonable price increase.

But Fox argued that DirecTV "has given us no chance to respond before taking an unnecessarily aggressive posture and going public."

In a similar dispute last year, Cablevision customers lost Walt Disney Co's ABC for several hours until 15 minutes into the live telecast of the Academy Awards.

LightSquared foe bias on GPS? (Politico)

When Bradford Parkinson wrote to the FCC in August, urging the commission to scuttle LightSquared?s plans for a nationwide wireless network, he signed off as vice chairman of a board of independent experts that advises federal agencies on GPS-related matters.

Here?s what he didn?t mention: Parkinson is heavily invested ? to the tune of millions of dollars ? in Trimble, a GPS company at the center of an all-out lobbying blitz against LightSquared in Congress and federal agencies, including the FCC.

Now LightSquared is crying foul, arguing that Washington is getting a skewed view of its business endeavor from the oft-cited Stanford professor and his colleagues on the federal advisory board.

?Parkinson appears merely to have been fulfilling his fiduciary responsibility as a Trimble board member to use his reputation and credibility ? and that of the federal advisory board on which he serves ? to protect his company and its stock owners,? said Terry Neal, a spokesman for LightSquared.

In an interview with POLITICO, Parkinson flatly rejected any suggestion of a conflict between his position on the panel ? formally named the National Space-Based Positioning Navigation & Timing Advisory Board ? and his role at Trimble. He said his advice in the debate has been based on what?s best for the country.

?I have no conflict of interest,? Parkinson said. ?My guess is that Trimble will actually end up with more business? if LightSquared enters the market.

?It?s well known that I?m on the board of Trimble,? Parkinson said, adding that ?everyone of significance is certainly aware of it.?

But a telecom analyst who has followed the LightSquared debate closely said he was unaware of Parkinson?s financial ties to Trimble ? and argued that they deserve wider airing.

?Dr. Parkinson has an exceptionally distinguished record and is clearly being listened to by important government players in this debate, but it?s not clear to me that everyone is aware of his direct involvement in Trimble through his board seat on the company,? said Paul Gallant of MF Global Holdings. ?His Trimble job doesn?t necessarily discredit his science, but government officials always want to know when advocates have a personal financial stake in the outcome.?

The GPS industry is engaged in a pitched battle against LightSquared, arguing that the band of wireless spectrum that the firm intends to use would interfere with GPS devices that rely on an adjacent band. LightSquared calls the charge overblown, at best, saying any interference issues can be resolved. It?s just a matter of who pays for the fixes.

(AP) ? The launch of the first two satellites for the European Union's Galileo navigation system was postponed until Friday ? adding at least one more day to years of waiting for a program promoted as the main rival to GPS to get off the ground.

The Galileo system, which has become a symbol of EU infighting, inefficiency and delay, is expected to open trans-Atlantic competition with the ubiquitous American GPS network.

The EU had all the pomp and speeches about the dawning of a new age prepared for Thursday, but was forced to postpone it for at least 24 hours because of a leaky valve that kept a Russian Soyuz rocket grounded at the launch site in French Guiana on the northern coast of South America.

GPS has become the global consumer standard in satellite navigation over the past decade, reducing the need for awkward oversized maps and arguments with back seat drivers about whether to turn left or right.

Now, the EU wants Galileo to dominate the future with a system which is more precise, more reliable than GPS, while controlled by civil authorities. It foresees applications ranging from precision seeding on farmland to pinpoint positioning for search-and-rescue missions. On top of that, the EU hopes it will reap a financial windfall.

"If Europe wants to be competitive and independent in the future, the EU needs to have its own satellite navigation system to also create new economic opportunities", said Herbert Reul, head of the EU parliament's industry, research and energy committee.

There are still several more years to wait, but the satellite launch is a major step in getting Galileo on track. It will start operating in 2014 as a free consumer navigation service, with more specialized services to be rolled out until 2020, when it should be fully operational. After the initial launch, two satellites will go up every quarter as of the end of 2012 until all 30 satellites are up.

The EU hopes its economic impact will stand at about euro90 billion ($125 billion) in industrial revenues and public benefits over the next two decades.

The idea for the program first rallied support in the late 1990s, and its development has been pushed back with delays ever since. When it became clear in 2008 that private investors weren't lining up to finance Galileo, the EU decided taxpayers would underwrite most of the program.

The European Commission said development and deployment since 2003 is estimated at well over euro5 billion ($6.8 billion). Maintaining and completing the system is expected to cost euro1 billion ($1.35 billion) a year.

Critics have said the cost overruns were much higher.

"Far from celebrating," officials "who have supported Galileo should be making a public apology to taxpayers for this shocking waste of time, effort and resources," EU legislator Marta Andreasen of the anti-Euro UKIP party said.

Officials hope to delay the launch of the Russian Soyuz rocket by only 24 hours, although a new date will be announced once the investigation is complete, said Jean-Yves Le Gall, chairman and CEO of Arianespace, the commercial arm of the European Space Agency.

The launch was originally scheduled for last year, but adverse weather kept delaying construction of the Soyuz facility.

French hostage taken from Kenya to Somalia dies (AP)

NAIROBI, Kenya ? France said Wednesday that a cancer-stricken quadriplegic Frenchwoman kidnapped off a Kenyan resort island appears to have died in captivity in Somalia, prompting Kenya to call the death an act of terror against the East African nation and France.

Kenya said it sent some 1,600 troops into Somalia last weekend to hunt al-Shabab militants because of the kidnapping of the French woman and three other Europeans from its country over the last six weeks. The nation's tourism minister told The Associated Press that the invasion is meant to push Islamist militants away from Kenya's tourist destinations.

Somali gunmen snatched Marie Dedieu in the middle of the night from her resort island home near Lamu on Oct. 1. The 66-year-old, wheelchair-bound woman suffered from cancer and required special medications several times a day, medicine her captors did not take with them.

French officials said Dedieu's state of health and the fact her kidnappers "probably refused to give her the medication we sent her" likely led to the death. The foreign ministry said her death had not been absolutely confirmed but was the most likely situation.

"We are so, so sad. We have lost a mother of this village. We have not lost a foreigner. We have lost a mother of the community," said Abdullah Fadhil, the property manager at Dedieu's residence in Lamu. "We wish she would be alive but because she has been sick and I know that the captors cannot give her the care she requires ... she has been very weak."

France's Foreign Ministry said that unspecified "contacts" told French officials that Dedieu had died but the date and circumstances of her death were not immediately known. It did not elaborate.

The Kenyan government offered its condolences and said Dedieu died while in al-Shabab captivity. Kenya maintains al-Shabab is behind the recent kidnappings, though some analysts have instead blamed pirates or criminals.

"The kidnapping and detention of Marie Dedieu was a terror act not only against her, but also against Kenya, her home country France and the entire world," the Kenyan government statement said.

After a weekly Cabinet meeting with President Nicolas Sarkozy, Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said Dedieu's death "isn't totally confirmed but is more than probable."

"Madame Dedieu was a gravely ill 66-year-old woman, afflicted with cancer (and) quadriplegic," he said. "Seizing a woman in this state is an act of barbarity."

French officials have demanded that her remains be handed over, and residents in Lamu remembered her as a kind woman.

"She was my friend," said resident Beatrice Halua. "She knew how to live with everyone: good people, bad people. She was a nice person. She had so many friends."

Kenyan military forces, meanwhile, continued their movements into Somalia, in pursuit of al-Shabab militants. Kenya's military claimed that it had killed more than 70 militants, but offered no evidence of that claim.

Kenya's tourism minister, Najib Balala told AP that Kenya sent in troops to push militants back from the country's tourist destinations, like Lamu, because they were creating instability and affecting the economy. Balala said the government was responding to the attacks.

"Security has been upped in the country and we made sure that we don't entertain any unscrupulous characters in our country," Balala said in an interview late Tuesday.

As a result of the kidnappings, Kenya had to revise its marketing strategy to attract tourists. Kenya hoped to earn $1 billion in tourism income this year, Balala said.

He said he is optimistic that the country's tourism will continue the rebound that it's made after being brought to a near standstill during the country's postelection violence in late 2007 and early 2008. Tourism revenues last year exceeded $900 million.

Hugh Regg, a tourist from Australia, visited one of Nairobi's most popular sites on Wednesday ? the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust ? where visitors can watch orphaned baby elephants being hand-fed by bottle. Regg said he was a nervous before arriving in Kenya because of the recent news, but hasn't had any negative experiences.

A new threat to Kenya emerged on Monday, when al-Shabab threatened to level Kenyan skyscrapers and carry out suicide bomb attacks like ones that killed 76 people in Kampala, Uganda in July 2010. Kenyan police this week sent out a terrorist attack warning and increased security at some downtown sites, including Nairobi's Somali neighborhood.

"Definitely we are not taking these threats lightly but we know they do not have the capacity to do a lot of this talk that they have talked," Balala said.

"I can assure everybody Lamu is safe, Kenya is safe," he added. "It is unfortunate this has happened, it has tainted our image. Too bad. But I believe people who know Kenya, trust me, Kenya is a safe destination."

Who is stealing Sean Penn's sandwiches?

Stars are just as disorganized and unmotivated in meetings as some of the rest of us are. At least that's how it is in a humorous clip from Funny or Die in which Ben Stiller tries to elicit ideas for promoting the Clinton Foundation from famous faces like Jack Black, Ted Danson, Kristen Wiig and Sean Penn.

Wiig's brilliant idea is for everyone to stop breathing for one minute per day. Danson's plan is cribbed from a brochure. Matt Damon just really wants to start a foundation softball team ? the "Clinton Clobberers" ? and he's even designed the uniforms. Black calls in with his own catchy theme song for the group. And Penn is outraged that someone keeps stealing his bag lunches out of the fridge, even though they're clearly marked.

Story: Gaga channels Marilyn Monroe at Clinton's concert

But things really get interesting when the former president himself calls in to check on the group. Or does he? The final scene is a hoot. And yes, you do find out who's snitching Penn's sack lunches.

The video is now online, but premiered Saturday at an event marking the 10th anniversary of the Clinton Foundation.

Protesters remain outside St. Paul's Cathedral (AP)

LONDON ? Hundreds of anti-capitalist protesters mingled with bemused bank workers outside London's St. Paul's Cathedral Monday, as welcoming but wary cathedral staff urged demonstrators not to deter tourists wanting to visit the historic building.

Around 500 demonstrators gathered outside the cathedral over the weekend as part of the global Occupy Wall Street protests. About 200 pitched tents around the cathedral, and have set up a makeshift kitchen, toilets and an information center.

The protesters, a loosely organized group inspired by the month-old movement in New York against corporate wrongdoing, seemed to have settled in for a long stay, but it was unclear how long they would be allowed to remain.

The ground immediately outside the church is owned by St. Paul's, which permitted the protest camp on the weekend, while the local authority also partly owns a stake in the nearby churchyard, part of London's medieval heart.

"It's quite a complicated, ancient melange of different interests," said the Rev. Rob Marshall, a spokesman for St. Paul's.

"The need is to keep access for pilgrims and tourists," he added.

Dean Graeme Paul Knowles of St. Paul's said prayer services had continued as normal over the weekend, but the "last few days have not been without various challenges." In his statement, he added that the protesters have been careful to make sure they do not block people trying to enter the cathedral but said cathedral staff, police and community leaders are "monitoring the situation carefully."

Protesters had planned to demonstrate outside the nearby London Stock Exchange, but they were turned back and returned to the foot of the cathedral, a London landmark nestled next to the city's financial district.

Designed by 17th-century architect Christopher Wren, its domed roof still dominates the London skyline. Princess Diana married there in 1981, her long wedding train tumbling over the steps where the protesters have set up their base.

Police tried to move protesters away from St. Paul's on Sunday but senior priest Giles Fraser said the demonstrators were welcome to stay and asked police officers to move instead.

One protester, Ian Chamberlin said the camp was well organized and peaceful.

"We have shared rules about things like not drinking, not taking drugs. We want to make sure the camp is a safe place to be," he said. "There's something symbolic about staying here, near the stock exchange, to pass on our message that the banking system isn't serving the needs of ordinary people, it is not a democratic force."

Chamberlin, 27, said he is willing to remain at the camp as long as he is allowed to.

Police said they can't remove the protesters as long as they have the landowner's permission, but will arrest anyone who commits a crime. Eight people were arrested over the weekend near St. Paul's, mainly for public disorder offenses, but police said the protests had been mainly peaceful.

Sit-down protests can be hard to dislodge. An anti-war vigil outside Britain's Parliament has continued for 10 years, despite repeated legal attempts by local authorities to move it. A handful remain even after legal challenges limited the protesters to the sidewalk, rather than the grass area of Parliament Square.

Thousands of people demonstrated against corporate greed in cities across Europe on Saturday, along with much smaller protests in cities across the U.S.

Rioters in Rome hijacked a peaceful protest, smashing bank and store windows, tearing up sidewalks and torching vehicles. The mayor of Rome says they caused at least euro1 million ($1.4 million) in damage.

Dr. Conrad Murray to Serve House Arrest if Convicted in Michael Jackson Manslaughter Case?

Perhaps it's a little too early to start talking about what happens if Dr. Conrad Murray gets convicted of felony involuntary manslaughter - he has yet to present his defense - but it does not look good for the physician right now.

Between the Michael Jackson autopsy photo, the 911 call and most of all, the various holes in his defense, he'll have to pull off a miracle to be acquitted.

So what happens when and if he gets convicted?

As for how much time Murray would serve, officials tell TMZ that Murray would be jailed for half the actual sentence. So four years as opposed to two.

Moreover, because of severe overcrowding, inmates are eligible for house arrest, based on their prior criminal history, and their risk to the community.

Murray has a clean record and, as one law enforcement official put it, "it's not like he's going to walk around with a bottle of Propofol and kill people."

So if the jail is filled to the max, the Sheriff could quickly put him on house arrest - if not right away, shortly into his sentence - ankle monitor style.

Again, this is all premature. The jury could still find him not guilty on all counts. But right now, we could bet heavily against that possibility occurring.

(AP) ? Economist Mohammad Yunus was the consummate storyteller, a fount of ideas on how to change Haiti.

Visiting from his native Bangladesh, the Nobel peace laureate poured out tale after tale Friday of how his concept of "social business" could apply to Haiti, a nation rife with woes well before last year's punishing earthquake.

Yunus told how he started his Grameen Foundation by lending $27 each to 42 illiterate women so they could pay off their debts, how a small yogurt business lessened malnutrition in Bangladesh and about the importance of creativity.

"There's a business world. There's a charity world," he told a hotel conference room crowded with college students and development workers. "Why can't we take those ideas and try to make money and also solve (social) problems?"

It was Yunus' first trip to Haiti, and he's certain to make more after he leaves Sunday.

The Grameen Creative Lab based in Germany, which he founded, opened an office in Haiti last year after the earthquake. It gave an $80,000 loan to a new vocational and computer-training school to cover startup costs, and it plans to hand out four more loans before year's end to other applicants with their own social business ideas.

Yunus, a celebrity in development circles for his ideas on helping the poor, recently joined a board of more than 30 philanthropists, former presidents and executives that seeks to advise Haitian President Michel Martelly on economic matters. Former U.S. President Bill Clinton, also the United Nations special envoy to Haiti, is co-chairman.

Martelly and his advisers met with Yunus on Thursday on the grounds of the National Palace, still a crumbled heap of snow-white concrete almost two years after the January 2010 earthquake.

Yunus said the "social business" idea is different from the "microcredit" industry that he pioneered in the 1980s, when he gave tiny loans to poor people to help them start small businesses.

His Grameen Creative Lab focuses on the "social business" approach. It gives out bigger loans, between $10,000 and $100,000. The interest rate and duration of the loan are set according to the risk and type of business.

Whatever profit is earned by a "social business" financed by the lab goes back into expanding the company. The aim is that creation and expansion of businesses will help a society lessen ills like hunger and unemployment.

"This is a new paradigm," said Kesner Pharel, a Haitian economist who was among a panelists of microcredit experts at the hotel. "This guy can be on the same level as Steve Jobs ... This is a new form of capitalism. It's not only about the bottom line but about how the community is doing."

Following the conference, Yunus dashed off to talk with students at the vocational and computer-training school that got the Grameen Creative Lab loan. He told several dozen students that they should think of themselves as job givers, not job seekers.

The ideas that Yunus brought were not without skeptics in a struggling Caribbean country where employment has long been elusive. About 72 percent of the population earns less than $2 a day.

"It's impossible for a young entrepreneur to do social business in Haiti," said Stanley Pierre, 25, a student at the school. "It's not until the business is truly successful and we have taken care of families can we then turn around and help the community."

On Saturday, Yunus and his team planned to travel to Haiti's Central Plateau to visit an office run by Fonkoze, a microcredit bank, and Partners in Health, a nonprofit group that provides health care to the poor.

He said he wants to encourage health-related "social businesses" in the countryside.
