Life Of Sports in
????????????????????????Ancient Greece:
Have you ever seen an army training or an athlete training? Ancient Greek sports were very similar to these. Their whole life was related sports. They had schools where they taught you about sports. They taught you how to be fit and tough. A person who wasn?t fit and tough enough, would mostly die in pain. But still they would never stop training. ?Sports were part of the daily life of the Greeks, including their childhood education and the Olympics.
One of the most popular recreation in ancient Greece was sports. Men played different kinds of sports in the ancient Greek society. Some of the popular games were running, horseback riding, wrestling, etc. Greek men were influenced by their states to keep up with sports, so they stayed fit and in condition for fighting if a war began. Wrestling was the most famous game, but it also got brutal as time passed by. But women were not allowed to participate in sports, they were expected to live a private life at home. Except Sparta where women were expected to play sports to stay healthy and have healthy babies.
Another way the sports were important to Greeks were their early childhood education. There were three different kind of schools in ancient Greece. The first was about literature, the second was about poetry and the last kind was sports. In the school of sports, they had trainers known as paidotribes, who would train students for sports and fitness. Most of the training was done in a gymnasium or in a wrestling school. There were also philosopher and sophists who taught about public speaking and many other subjects.
Sparta was very worried about getting attacked, so their education was all about toughness and physical fitness. The most important were athletics and weapon training. ?Sparta?s target was to make warriors for war. There were many activities done to make Spartan children tough and strong, such as boys had to make their bed from rushes and they weren?t allowed to have covers, and each year there was competition where boys were beaten to see who could take in the most pain. Some boys also died in pain. The food was also not edible in the Spartan schools, because they encouraged the boys to steal food from farms so they could be cunning.
The Olympics were the most important sports event in ancient Greece. The Olympics began in 776 BCE, and they always took place in Olympia. The Olympics was part of a religious ritual and so the games were honored to the god Zeus. Some of the games that they played in the Olympic games were chariot racing, horseback riding, javelin throw, discus throw, wrestling, etc. The athletes had to train for ten months before they participated in the Olympics. The person who would win would get fame and fortune, and the people who would lose would probably go back to their old life or get killed by their coaches. The Greek Olympics were just for the Greek city states, it wasn?t a international event. . It wasn?t an international event. People from all over Greece came to watch the Olympics. That was the only time when wars and fights would stop and everyone would join together for the joy of the Olympics. But women were not allowed to watch or participate in the Olympics.
Ancient Greece did have a lot of sports events. Sports were really important to them including in their childhood education and of course Olympics, the most important sports event in ancient Greece. That?s how sports were life to ancient Greeks.
