(AP) ? Carmelo Anthony was so locked in, he didn't even realize how far he was shooting from.

Those 3-pointers put him in the record book. A drive to the basket put the Knicks back in the win column.

Anthony tied a franchise record with nine 3-pointers, then converted a go-ahead, three-point play with 12.5 seconds left to cap a 42-point night and lead New York to a 106-104 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday.

The Hawks shot a season-high 60 percent from the field but had their three-game winning streak snapped when Josh Smith, burned on Anthony's basket, missed a 3-pointer on Atlanta's final possession.

Anthony wasn't aware of the record, but he clearly knew his shot was on. So did the Hawks, and Smith may have been expecting a jumper on the last possession and was caught flat-footed when Anthony went right by him.

"It was just a matter of me just taking them shots and making them," Anthony said. "I know I'm capable of making them, but when I'm making them from the outside, from the perimeter, it opens up the game that much more, for myself, for my teammates, and that's what happened tonight."

Amare Stoudemire and J.R. Smith each had 18 points for the Knicks, who were 16 of 27 (59 percent) from 3-point range. Raymond Felton had 12 points and 10 assists in his second game back after a 10-game absence with a broken right pinky.

Jeff Teague scored 27 points for the Hawks. Smith added 20 and Al Horford had 16.

Anthony matched the Knicks' record for 3-pointers held by John Starks, Latrell Sprewell (twice) and Toney Douglas. He also tied Richie Guerin's franchise record with his 29th straight 20-point game. He pulled up for the final one during a streak of three in a row in the first half from the 'G' in the wording "Madison Square Garden" ? a good 4 feet behind the line.

"One of them heat check shots at that time," he said, claiming he was unaware where he was standing and using the term for a player launching from extremely deep or extremely quickly to test how hot he really is.

Asked if he'd ever made 10 3s in a game, Anthony responded by asking how many he made last summer in the Olympics.

Indeed, he was 10 of 12 in a 37-game point game against Nigeria ? not exactly a quality team such as the Hawks.

His biggest basket came nowhere near the arc.

The Knicks came out of a timeout down by one and Anthony found Smith on him after he was played much of the final period by DeShawn Stevenson, a rugged defender who had frustrated him into a potentially costly technical foul.

Anthony blew by Smith to the left, getting fouled as he laid the ball in.

"He took what the defense gave him," Felton said. "Josh Smith kind of lifted his leg a little bit and then he attacked the back leg, got to the basket and got the and-one. He's been doing a great job of finishing games for us and closing out and hitting big shots."

The ensuing free throw made it 106-104 and Anthony nearly came up with a steal on Atlanta's final possession, but the ball deflected out to Smith, who had a good look that was long.

"It was a good look. It just didn't go down," Smith said. "It was really a back-and-forth game. For us to be able to have a chance at making a game-winning shot or a tying field goal towards the end of that game (with) how well they shot the 3, lets us know that we had a pretty good basketball game ourselves. We just fell a little short."

A night after an ugly 97-80 loss, the Knicks had no problems on offense, though could never get much cushion against the speedy Hawks.

Anthony was poked in the eye by Stevenson with 1:51 left, and responded by angrily slamming the ball to the court, leaving the officials with no choice but to call the technical foul. Kyle Korver made the free throw to give Atlanta a 102-101 lead.

Anthony then missed a jumper, but Stoudemire was fouled and made two free throws. Horford scored on an alley-oop eight seconds later, setting the stage for Anthony's final basket.

The All-Star forward finished 15 of 28 from the field and was 9 of 12 behind the arc in his fourth 40-point game this season.

"It's difficult, because he can make the 3-pointer and he's also fast," Horford said. "He has a first step, like we say in the league, it's a quick first step and explosive. He's a good player."

Leading 27-25 after one, the Knicks ran off the first nine points of the second quarter, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Pablo Prigioni to open a 36-25 advantage. The Hawks wiped all of that away in about six minutes, but Anthony steadied the Knicks with three 3-pointers in the final 2:50. It was 52-all at halftime.

Anthony then hit five 3s in a 17-point third quarter, his final one making it 82-74. The Knicks needed all his offense to build a lead, with the Hawks making 9 of 13 shots (69 percent) in the period.

NOTES: Knicks guard Jason Kidd sat out the second half. The Knicks said the 39-year-old was just being rested. ... Because of Rajon Rondo's torn ACL, he will need to be replaced on the Eastern Conference All-Star team, and Hawks coach Larry Drew hopes Commissioner David Stern looks at Smith or Horford. "No doubt about it. I think both of my guys have been overlooked," Drew said. "It's unfortunate what happened to Rondo, but certainly my guys should be in consideration. Strong consideration." ... The Knicks acknowledged Tyson Chandler's All-Star selection during a first-half timeout. With Anthony voted to start, it's the first time the Knicks have had two players picked since Allan Houston and Sprewell in 2001.

Dunkin' Donuts plans return to California

11 hrs.

LOS ANGELES -- ?Dunkin' Donuts said on Wednesday it would open shops in southern California in 2015 in its long-awaited return to the state it left more than a decade ago when it was under different management.

Fiercely loyal Dunkin' Donuts customers have been clamoring for it to re-enter California, which the company said is the No. 1 state for grocery sales of its bagged coffee.

The coffee chain expects to open 150 to 200 shops in southern California by 2020, said Nigel Travis, chief executive of Dunkin' Brands Inc and president of Dunkin' Donuts for the United States. "We eventually plan to have more than 1,000 restaurants throughout the state," he said.

Dunkin' Donuts closed its last California store in Sacramento in August 2002. Customers complained that the firm's shops were run-down and outdated. Dunkin's marketing vice president at the time, Kenneth Kimmel, said, "We just couldn't break the doughnut paradigm in California."

Dunkin' Donuts parent Dunkin Brands went public in July 2011 with the goal of expanding Dunkin' Donuts.

The chain, whose current tagline is "America runs on Dunkin,'" has since put greater emphasis on coffee and embraced its more blue collar roots by positioning itself as a more affordable alternative to fancier coffee chains like Starbucks Corp .

Travis said drive-thrus would likely be a significant part of the store mix in southern California, where driving is a big part of everyday life.

Dunkin' Donuts, which has been expanding westward in states such as Arizona, Nevada and Colorado, said it was recruiting franchisees for Los Angeles, Riverside, San Diego, San Bernardino, Ventura and Orange counties. At this time, there are no specific plans for offering franchises for sale in northern California, the company said.

California native Krista Thomas, marketing vice president at Fan Appz, said she became a "mad, passionate Dunkin' fan" during the 12 years she lived in Boston.

Now residing in the southern California beach town of Venice, she has had to settle for buying Dunkin' Donuts packaged coffee in grocery stores.

Thomas said it would be worth waiting for Dunkin' but admitted that her first reaction was, "Two years away? Come on, you're killing me!"

The chain's competitors in California, the nation's most populous state, will include national brands such as McDonald's Corp and Starbucks as well as smaller chains such as Peet's Coffee & Tea, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Winchell's Donut House.

In May, Dunkin' opened a unit on a U.S. Marine base near San Diego, but access to that cafe is limited.

There are about 7,200 Dunkin' Donuts in the United States and more than 3,100 elsewhere. This year, Dunkin' Donuts plans to open 330 to 360 net new stores in the United States.

Domestic Dunkin' Donuts cafes contribute almost 75 percent of revenue and more than 80 percent of profit at Dunkin' Brands.

Shares in Dunkin' Brands closed up 2.6 percent to $34.89 on the Nasdaq.?

Krupnikas! A Durham-Made Spiced Honey Liqueur comes to ABC ...

You are here: Home / TRENDS / Krupnikas! A Durham-Made Spiced Honey Liqueur comes to ABC Stores

The Brothers Vilgalys Krupnikas, a widely-anticipated spiced honey liqueur made by Durham?s first legal distilled spirits plant, will debut on Durham County ABC shelves this Thursday, the 17th of January. This timing is especially important given that Durham is currently vying for the top spot in Southern Living?s Tastiest Town in the South promotion in which Durham was named a top ten contender alongside powerhouse destinations like Charleston, Miami, and New Orleans.

The Brothers Vilgalys Spirits Company was started by Rimas Vilgalys, a Lithuanian-American and Durham native. Vilgalys started with a homemade recipe that he and his father had been making for friends and family for years. Inspired by the popularity of the liqueur at parties, as well as the strong support for locally owned businesses in Durham, Vilgalys began researching and writing a business plan in 2011. In April 2012, he leased a commercial space on Ramseur St and began the process of applying for permits, buying equipment, and setting up a space to blend the drink.

To fund the project, Vilgalys used money he?d inherited, and also started the Brothers Vilgalys Founder?s Club, selling lifetime club memberships to friends, family, and community members who wanted to support the project. At the time of this writing, the Founder?s Club has sold 125 memberships.

?The Founder?s Club really embodies my reasons for starting this company,? says Vilgalys. ?When I started making Krupnikas, I just wanted to make something delicious and share it with my friends. And after the first batch, it seems like people just kept asking where they could get more.?

Brothers Vilgalys Krupnikas, which is already on shelves in some Wake and Orange County ABC stores, is made from a recipe using whole spices, North Carolina wildflower honey, and a neutral spirit base distilled from corn. Vilgalys has started out purchasing the alcohol from a supplier, but hopes to transition to distilling his own spirits in the future.

?The truth is the equipment for a full distillery is just too expensive right now,? says Vilgalys. ?But sourcing everything locally is an important priority to me. As we expand, I?m hoping to start distilling our own alcohol and also run everything on sustainable energy. I?m particularly interested in a technology called wood-gasification, which would let us turn timber residues like sawdust or wood chips into clean-burning, locally sourced, and fossil-fuel free energy.?

The drink itself is described by Vilgalys as a smooth sipping liqueur that is very tasty on its own, or can be mixed in many different cocktails. It starts out with a sweet honey taste, and finishes with a pleasantly spicy warmth along with a lasting flavor. Some of the stronger spices include cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and star anise, but with 16 different botanicals used, the drink has a very layered taste without any single spice dominating the pallette.

?Compared to other honey spirits, our drink has more complexity and depth to its flavor,? notes Vilgalys. ?Other honey spirits use clover or agave honey, which is cheaper, but not as flavorful. We don?t compromise on any part of this spirit. I use only whole spices and raw wildflower honey. Even the commercial brands of Krupnikas in Lithuania and Poland don?t do that.?

The Brothers Vilgalys Krupnikas retails at $29.95 for a 750 ml bottle. The product is 40% alcohol by volume, and should always be enjoyed responsibly. More information, including a directory of liquor stores, bars, and restaurants carrying the product are available on their website. News and updates related to the product are published on their Facebook and Twitter (@BrosVilgalys).

?I really think this is a great drink that almost any adult can enjoy,? concludes Vilgalys. ?Whether you usually drink spirits, beer, wine, or cocktails, this is something accessible and pleasing to almost anyone. It?s great to bring to parties or give as a gift. I wouldn?t say it?s only for special occasions, but it would make any occasion a special one.?

Storm likely to dump snow from Deep South to DC

By Chris Dolce, weather.com

A winter storm will spread both snow and rain across the South and into the Mid-Atlantic Thursday into Thursday night.

A strong area of low-pressure will move through the Deep South Thursday and head into the Atlantic Ocean by early Friday.

Ahead of this system, heavy rain and flooding will be a concern in parts of the Appalachians and Southeast.

Read more from weather.com

Rain is expected to change to snow and sleet Thursday morning through Thursday evening in areas from parts of Mississippi, northern Alabama, northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee to the Southern Appalachians, northern North Carolina and Virginia.

The heaviest accumulations of snow -- 6 inches or more ? were expected in the higher elevations of the Southern Appalachians.

Parts of Mississippi, northern Alabama and northern Georgia could see anything from a dusting to a few inches.

To the east of the Appalachians, 1 to 4 inches of snow with locally higher amounts possible could hit from northern North Carolina to parts of central/eastern Virginia and southern Maryland.

Some accumulating snow is possible as far north as the Washington, D.C. and Dover, Del. metro areas, which could affect the afternoon and evening commute.

This is roughly the northern fringe of potential accumulations in this region and exact amounts will be dependent on how much moisture reaches this far north.

The southern fringe of possible snow accumulations may reach as far south as Raleigh, N.C. and Greensboro, N.C.

If D.C. can officially record more than two inches of snow, it would exceed the entire total from all of last season. So far this season, only two tenths of an inch of snow has been measured.

Though snowfall with this system will be of short duration, it could also be heavy at times. Given that temperatures have been mild recently, the best chance for accumulations in the lower elevations outside the Appalachians will be on grassy and elevated surfaces. That said, heavier snowfall rates could lead to accumulations on road surfaces as well.

As the storm shifts out to sea on Thursday night, it may move close enough to the Northeast coast to bring some snow to parts of the southern New Jersey coast, eastern Long Island and far southeastern New England.

Yan Roberts: A Love Letter to Harper From the Oil Industry

Last week, a year-old letter signed by the associations representing the petroleum, gas and pipeline industry in Canada was exposed. It asked the federal government to modify six critical environmental laws that inconvenienced the signers' industries.

Five of these laws have since been chopped up into omnibus bills C-38 and C-45, which significantly dismantled Canada's environmental protection. The letter was obtained last week by Greenpeace via Access to Information.

Before specifically naming which environmental laws they want changed and getting into the details of those desired changes, the letter characterizes Canada's environmental law as "almost entirely focused on preventing bad things from happening" and puzzlingly attempts to criticizes it for being so:

"We believe that the basic approach embodied in existing legislation is out-dated. At the heart of most existing legislation is a philosophy of prohibiting harm; 'environmental' legislation is almost entirely focused on preventing bad things from happening rather than enabling responsible outcomes. This results in a position of adversarial prohibition, rather than enabling collaborative conservation to achieve agreed common goals."

It is more than troubling that this letter explicitly names the acts the signatories want altered and goes on to specifically spell out the changes they want to our country's environmental safety net. It is more than suspicious that we have now seen most of these changes come to pass in omnibus bills C-38 and C-45.

In their letter, the petroleum, gas and pipeline industry associations identified the National Energy Board Act, Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, Species at Risk Act, Fisheries Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act and the Navigable Waters Protection Act as part of an "out-dated" approach. So far, the migratory birds are the only ones that have since escaped having their federal protection eliminated.

Take a moment to unwind and then brace yourself for the next part of the letter. After identifying the environmental regulation easements that we have now seen put in place, the letter moves on to suggest the federal government rework First Nation's land claims:

"In addition to considering regulatory reform in the context of environmental legislation and regulation, in parallel progress must be made on issues associated with Aboriginal consultation."

As with the environmental protection eliminations, the requested changes to the Indian Act are solely in the interest of the industries that sent the letter, and not in the interest of the communities and peoples affected. Of course the federal government was quick to comply with this request as well, and we are currently seeing the frustration of the people play out across the nation. Driven over the edge, they march and rally now, having already decided to take matters into their own hands. With Idle No More, they are bravely standing in opposition to the very things that should have every Canadian on their feet and expressing outrage.

Never should one industry get to write Canada's environmental law. Never should one industry get to rewrite Canada's treaties. Never should one industry be listened to over the voice of tens of thousands of protesting citizens.

The letter was signed by the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers, Canadian Energy Pipeline Association, Canadian Gas Association and the Canadian Petroleum Products Institute. It was surely just one element in a broader conversation of lobbying. Of course we all know that lobbying on this level exists and has its effects.

The scandal here is that the Harper government is blatantly adhering to the interests of one industry -- adhering to the interests of one industry over other industries, adhering to the interests of one industry over the broader interests of all Canadians, and adhering to the interests of one industry over the fundamental protection of our land and waters.

What are we to make of how easy a time these industry lobbyists had at furthering their own interests? It begins to seem outlandish when we compare this to how difficult of a time Canadian citizens have when simply asking their government to pass these kinds of bills openly (with debate and dialogue, and not all lumped together like some mega-omnibus bill).

What are we to make that a letter from an oil, gas and pipeline lobby group and addressed to only the Minister of Environment Canada and the Minister of Natural Resources Canada appears to set in motion deep reforms to the relationship the federal government has with our First Nation peoples?

If we let basic protection of our environments, communities or commitments lapse, then it won't be long before we have to attend the consequences. These will be the kind of consequences without easy remedy. I'll be honest, I write this with the idea that exposing the scandal here could bring more people into action. But what kind of action?

Let this letter help us all understand the mechanics of lobbying -- beyond experiencing its effects on a daily basis. It is positive to see that many Canadians are being encouraged to bypass the limited media coverage of these concerns and go and seek out this information for themselves. Choose one part of these omnibus bills and examine it closely. If you enjoy having healthy streams, rivers and lakes then perhaps start with that aspect.

The Act which previously provided basic protection for our Canadian waters was eliminated and its replacement is called the Navigation Protection Act. Notice first that the word "water" has been removed from the title; that will give you insight into the meat of this Act.

This is a continuation of the Harper government's abandonment of responsibility to protect water and water habitats. This new acts leaves 99.9 per cent of our rivers and 99.7 per cent of our lakes without basic protection.

If you get a big kick out of horrifying dismal catastrophes then you will love this next part: Bridges are mentioned in this new replacement Act but there is no federal governing policy for how pipelines are regulated when they near or cross water. Recall that one of the four signees of the lobby letter was the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association.

Bill C-45 tries to reassure us that "Canadian waters will continue to be protected by Transport Canada's marine safety laws, the Fisheries Act, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 and various provincial statutes." But anyone who has been following along will remember that the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act and the Fisheries Act were both gutted in omnibus budget bill C-38 when resource interests were favoured over the health of the environment.

What on Earth are we doing? Or rather, what are we allowing to be done? Nature strives to experience the hospitality of our human world. We cannot let government's failings represent our humanness. We must give mercy and deep appreciation in the form of basic environmental protection.

  • MP And Public Service Pensions

UPDATE: MP Pensions have been hived off from the omnibus bill and passed without further debate in a surprise deal between the government and opposition parties. Starting as early as January 2013, public servants and MPs will have to contribute 50 per cent of the payments into their pensions. MPs will also have to wait until age 65 to start collecting their pensions, or be penalized if they start at age 55. The precise date for MP pension changes is Jan. 1, 2016. There will be no change to the current eligibility for MP pensions of six years of service.

  • Unemployment Insurance

The Canada Employment Insurance Financing Board will be dissolved, and an interim means of establishing premium rates set up to replace its work. The Crown Corporation is currently run by a seven-member board. This move continues employment insurance changes started with the first omnibus budget bill, as cabinet gradually receives more authority to reform EI.

  • Changes To The Indian Act

The bill makes what could be controversial changes to the Indian Act, amending it to change the rules around what kind of meetings or referenda are required to lease or otherwise grant an interest in designated reserve lands. The aboriginal affairs minister would also be given the authority to call a band meeting or referendum for the purpose of considering an absolute surrender of the band's territory.

  • Environmental Assessment Act Tweaks

Last spring's changes to the Environmental Assessment Act are tweaked further in this omnibus bill.

  • Hiring Tax Credit

The bill will extend a popular small business hiring credit.

  • New Bridge To U.S.

C-45 also facilitates the construction of a new bridge across the Detroit River at Windsor, announced by Prime Minister Stephen Harper last summer. Certain legislation will be changed and other legislation won't apply to this bridge. Three federal bodies will cease to exist with the passage of this legislation.

  • Grain Act Amended

The bill also amends the Canada Grain Act, simplifying the way it classifies grain terminals, repealing grain appeal tribunals, and ending several other requirements of the current Act, giving the Canadian Grains Commission more power to regulate the grain industry. These changes follow the end of the Canadian Wheat Board's monopoly over wheat and barley sales in Western Canada, which take effect for this year's harvest.

  • Hazardous Materials Under Health

All the work of the Hazardous Materials Information Review Commission will be transferred to the health minister.

  • Merchant Seamen Board Under Labour

The Merchant Seamen Compensation Board will see its authority transferred to the Minister of Labour. The three-person board currently hears and decides benefit claims for merchant seamen who are injured or disabled as a result of their work and are not currently covered by provincial workers' compensation benefits.

Some Guy Always Gets Blamed for Lost Phones That He Never Stole Because of a Horrible Location Glitch

Las Vegas, the amazing place that sucks souls, wallets and dignities, is also really good at swallowing cell phones. Drunk, partying, WHOOPS. And whenever a phone is lost, people who use location services to find their lost phones always seem to track it back to the same place: Wayne Dobson's house. But the thing is, Wayne Dobson never stole a phone. Instead, a glitch with Sprint is making it appear as if their phone is inside Dobson's house—even if it's not. More »

Bomb rocks disputed Iraqi city Kirkuk, killing 4

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A powerful suicide car bomb struck the local headquarters for the party of a key Kurdish leader early Wednesday in the disputed Iraqi city of Kirkuk, killing at least four and wounding dozens, according to officials.

The blast outside the offices of the Kurdistan Democratic Party caused widespread damage, mangling cars and tearing apart storefronts. The KDP is led by Massoud Barzani, the president of Iraq's largely autonomous Kurdish region, who has frequently sparred with Iraq's central governor in Baghdad.

Kirkuk provincial council chairman Hassan Torhan said 90 people have been wounded, suggesting the death toll could rise.

The blast comes amid rising tensions along Iraq's ethnic and sectarian divide.

Kirkuk, 290 kilometers (180 miles) north of Baghdad, is home to a mix of Arabs, Kurds and Turkomen, who all have competing claims to the oil-rich area. The Kurds want to incorporate it into their self-ruled region in Iraq's north, but Arabs and Turkomen are opposed.

The city is at the heart of a snaking swath of territory disputed between the Kurds, who have their own armed fighting force, and Iraq's central government. A shootout in another area along the contested area prompted both sides to rush troops and heavy weapons to the area in November.

Violence has fallen since the peak of insurgency several years ago, but lethal attacks still occur frequently.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Tuesday's attacks, but car bombs are the hallmark of Sunni insurgents such as al-Qaida in Iraq.

Internet memes of Sharifah Zohra Jabeen have sprouted after the SW1M president publicly berated a university student for voicing her views against the BN government in an open forum last month. ? Courtesy of pics.lockerz.com

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 15 ? In fending off cyber brickbats hurled against its president, a little-known organisation called Suara Wanita 1 Malaysia (SW1M) launched an offensive by posting on its Facebook a video link showing Sharifah Zohra Jabeen?s verbal attack against a vocal university student that has already sparked an Internet storm.

The group, which claims to be non-profit and non-government-linked, appeared proud with the uproar stirred by the lopsided exchange between its president and the Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) undergraduate identified as Bawani K.S. whom it labelled ?Little Ambiga? in its latest Facebook posting today, in a mocking reference to Bersih co-chair and prominent lawyer Datuk Ambiga Sreenevasan.

?full vid Sharifah hentam little ambiga...............tgk mcmana bavani lari......kikikiki [sic],? said an administrator for the organisation who went by the nickname ?Ratu Naga?.

Sharifah Zohra Jabeen, who was sported donning a 1 Malaysia button badge commonly associated with the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN), shot to infamy after a 25-minute clip of her laying into Bawani at a public forum last month was uploaded on YouTube and other social media sites last week.

While Sharifah Zohra Jabeen appears to have gone underground since the video storm started, SW1M has adopted a truculent ? some say aggressive ? attitude towards the entire episode.?

In a separate post on its fanpage, a SW1M administrator identified as ?Langsi? said there was no need for the group or Sharifah Zohra Jabeen to apologise to Bawani for disrupting the latter?s speech in the forum.

?THERE IS NO NEED FOR HER TO APOLOGIZE TO BAVANI -- AS BAVANI NEED TO LEARN HOW TO RESPECT OTHER?S-- NGEH3,? Langsi posted.

Another administrator who went by the pseudonym ?Mis Natrah? also backed the SW1M president and continued to paint a belligerent picture of Bawani, alleging the student told ?fairy tales? and having ?run away? and disrespecting Sharifah Zohra Jabeen who ?have gut?s [sic]? to teach her a lesson.

The group?s defence of its president, however, appeared to have backfired as Facebook followers seemed more amused by the administrator?s extreme poor command of the English language, and responded in kind.

?Oh my!!! poor thing...you seriously need some intensive english lessons!!!? posted Facebook user Ashwin Johl.

?Whoahh..SW1M?s powderful England,? said another, identified as Han Yang Toh.

The video starts with the university students swearing an oath in the national language before cutting to the student, Bawani, who took to a microphone in a packed auditorium to speak on a court ruling on the Bersih electoral rallies last year and ask why Malaysia was unable to offer free education like other countries.

Sharifah Zohra Jabeen, who appeared to be emceeing the forum, interrupts her mid-way, telling her to ?Listen!? a whopping 11 times and even taking away the microphone from Bawani to stop the student from speaking further.

?Number one, when this is our programme, we allow you to speak,? Sharifah Zohra Jabeen said, and then added, ?Number two, when I speak, you listen.?

Sharifah Zohra Jabeen also quelled another student who attempted to speak out, saying insistently, ?Let me speak? before asking the rest of the auditorium audience: ?Students in the hall, 2,300 students everywhere. Did I give her respect? Did I give her respect? I came up to her, shook hands with her and gave her respect as another woman. Do you think I need to answer her question with this attitude??

She then labelled Ambiga an ?anarchist?, and criticised the student for highlighting the need for free education in the country, even telling her ?if you equate Malaysia to other countries, what are you doing in Malaysia??

?Go to Cuba, go to Argentina, go to Libya, go everywhere. Because all the students in this hall are happy with whatever the government does for them,? she said, and ticked Bawani off for having ?a very least of pendidikan [education]?.

A Barisan Nasional deputy minister and the Umno Youth chief have been forced to engage in damage control to prevent its fallout from impacting the ruling coalition ahead of Election 2013.

Undergraduates in local universities have in recent years become increasingly more vocal and critical of the government, more so after the Najib administration moved to loosen the law allowing students to participate in politics, in a bid to draw support from the younger generation who are seen to make up a substantial voter demographic group.

Last year, several student groups took part in demonstrations nationwide to demand greater freedom and free university education.

Bernanke prods Congress to raise debt ceiling

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Monday that it's important that Congress raise the nation's borrowing limit before the Treasury runs out of maneuvering room to avoid a potential default on U.S. debt.

Bernanke, speaking at the University of Michigan, said the approaching debt limit is one of the "critical fiscal watersheds" for the government in coming weeks.

President Barack Obama also spoke Monday about the urgency of raising the limit. Obama said he wouldn't let congressional Republicans use the debt limit as leverage in negotiations over spending cuts.

Bernanke noted that an impasse over the debt ceiling in 2011 led to a rating downgrade of long-term U.S. debt, the first time that's occurred. He said Congress should raise the ceiling to "avoid a situation where our government doesn't pay its bills."

The Fed decided last month to keep buying $85 billion a month in Treasurys and mortgage bonds to try to keep borrowing costs low and encourage more spending. The bond-buying program was left open-ended.

But it turned out that Fed officials differed about how long the bond purchases should continue. When the minutes of the meeting were released Jan. 3, they revealed that "several" committee members thought the purchases should slow or end well before year's end. These officials fear the bond buying is keeping rates so low for so long that it could ignite inflation or encourage speculative buying of risky assets.

Still, many economists have said they think the Fed will maintain its bond purchases at their current level through 2013.

On Monday, Bernanke didn't address the divisions within the Fed. But he said he thought the new round of bond buying was providing key support. He said the Fed will continue to assess the benefits of the bond buying against any risks of continuing the purchases.

Bernanke said the purchases have shown that the Fed still has "ammunition" to aid the economy even after having cut short-term interest rates to near zero.

Last month, the Fed also said it planned to keep its key short-term interest rate at a record low even after unemployment falls close to a normal level ? which it said might take three more years. Unemployment remains high at 7.8 percent because the economy is growing too slowly and not creating jobs fast enough.

In December, employers added 155,000 jobs, roughly matching the monthly average in 2011 and 2012. That's just been enough to slowly reduce the unemployment rate, which fell 0.7 percentage point during 2012.

IA Governor Unveils Education Reform Proposal - KWQC-TV6 News ...

A new legislative session kicked off in Iowa Monday, and Governor Terry Branstad outlined his vision for education reform.

Branstad unveiled a proposal that would use $187 million over the next five years.

Much of that plan centers around teacher compensation.

Of course, the big headline coming out of the governor's education reform package is a proposal for increasing the minimum salary for entry-level teachers to $35,000 a year, up from $28,000 a year right now.

On top of that, the plan includes pay bumps for teachers who take on more responsibilities, and a "Teach Iowa Initiative" - tuition assistance and reimbursement for college students who commit to teaching in Iowa for five years after they graduate.

The hope is that all of that will add up to attracting - and keeping - more top-notch teachers in the state's classrooms.

"I think it is very important to attract more teachers to the field because I do believe that our students today are our future," said Scott Community College student Kellie Sharp.

And for this education major, the future looks a little brighter.

Still, Sharp said, for people who are called to the profession - because teaching really is a calling - the money generally is not the deciding factor.

"That never overshadowed the fact that I want to help children," she said.

"Coming from a background as a special education student myself, I really want to teach the special ed students and teach them that they can achieve anything that they set their minds to," she went on to explain.

Sharp said the promise of better compensation when she graduates is just a bonus. But, it may make a much bigger difference for some of her classmates.

"I've talked with a few, and they're just not sure what they want to do. They want to be a teacher, but they want something that pays better," she said.

According to Dr. Tom Carpenter, the Director of the School of Education at St. Ambrose University, that is a common problem for this field:

"You make a lot of financial sacrifices to be a teacher, and if you're in the math and sciences, you look at a lot of other kinds of career alternatives," he said.

Carpenter said the reforms proposed still won't make teaching the most financially attractive job, but they are a move in the right direction.

"These kinds of things will attract the best and the brightest to come and teach in the Iowa schools," he said.

That should translate into better and brighter students coming out of Iowa's classrooms.

Other reforms included in the governor's plan include expanding online education opportunities for high school students, improving the way teacher evaluations are done, and lightening the loads for first-year teachers so they can spend more time learning from the seasoned veterans in their field.

All of this, of course, would require approval by the Legislature.

Opera Rebis Reasons You Need Help When Buying Real Estate

January 14, 2013

If you are thinking about buying a piece of real estate, it is very important for you to have someone by your side throughout the entire process. After all, this is a very large investment and you need to know that you are not making a mistake. It is never a good idea to buy a home without the help of a real estate agent. They will be able to help you get a more affordable price on the home. A good real estate agent will also make sure that you have someone to inspect the home. This way, you will not get stuck with a home that needs a lot of work.

There is a lot of paperwork when it comes to buying real estate. This is another reason why you want someone to help you. You will quickly find that this is one of the most stressful situations that you could ever put yourself in. If you did not have someone to explain everything to you, it would not be very pleasant.

When buying a home, if you have a real estate agent by your side, they will be able to show you homes that you would have never known were up for sale. A real estate agent has access to much more information than you can imagine. It is worth the extra money to pay someone to help you to find the home of your dreams.

Keep in mind that this is the home where you are going to live for the rest of your life. You may as well make sure that it is something that you can be happy with. Make sure that the monthly mortgage payment is within your budget. You also want to make sure that the home is in good condition. Too many things can go wrong when buying a home. You definitely need someone who is going to walk you through the process. Before you know it, you will be settled in your new home and you can start enjoying life much more than before.

Finding Help & Hope for the Journey | Tapestry

Finding Help and Hope for the Journey - ImageIt began simply enough.? We had welcomed our son home less than a year earlier, and we were on our way home from a small gathering of adoptive families at a local church.? That evening was spent listening to a couple of stories shared by other adoptive families, and telling the basics of our own story over and over as people bounced from one conversation to another before and after the event.?

But for everything this gathering lacked ? organization, intentional purpose, polished speakers ? it offered the one thing we needed most: a connection to those who ?got it.?? Never mind that few of the families had come together and looked just like our family.? They were all adoptive families and that counted for a lot.? It meant we were familiar and understood.? It meant that we belonged.

Fast forward three years later and the leaders of this small church group asked us if we would consider taking over the group and leading it.? What had started as a vibrant and growing support system for families that had adopted older children from Russia in the late 1990?s had dwindled to only a small handful of families that met every other month.? Honestly, there was not much to ?take over,? but we had what seemed like a crazy idea at the time.? Our idea was that maybe other families needed what we needed ? connection, encouragement, and help.? And maybe, just maybe a church was the perfect place to offer it and for others to find it.?

So in September 2005, Tapestry began as the adoption and foster care ministry at Irving Bible Church.?? Our first event was less than impressive.? We had a whopping 22 people attend.? But that mattered little as the focus was on building relationships.? As a ministry, we had little to offer.? No materials, no expertise, no elaborately planned events or high-quality seminars and conferences.? Instead, we simply offered friendship and the promise that we would be honest about our journey and would be open to the honesty of others.?

At our first event we set out what has become known at Tapestry as the ?three things.?? We told the group gathered that evening the three things that we believe are absolutely true about the adoption and foster care journey.? Those ?three things? are: the adoption/foster care journey won?t be easy; it will be worth it; and you should not go it alone.? The truth of these realities continues to guide Tapestry today.

During the past seven years Tapestry has been blessed to walk alongside literally thousands of adoptive and foster families.? Locally, Tapestry is privileged to serve hundreds of families face-to-face through a variety of activities and events, including discussion-based small groups, large group educational events, parent training courses, family-to-family mentoring, outreach events, a summer family camp, and the annual Tapestry Conference.? And thousands more families are served via Tapestry?s website, through the distribution of our resources and materials, and through Empowered To Connect, a partnership between Tapestry and Dr. Karyn Purvis, author of The Connected Child.

Yet even as Tapestry has grown to become one of the largest church-based adoption and foster care ministries in the nation, it remains unique in many ways.? For example, while Tapestry is a local church ministry of Irving Bible Church, nearly 85% of the estimated 1,400+ people that we serve face-to-face each year do not attend our church.? In fact, many of those connected to Tapestry do not regularly attend or identify with any church.? In that sense, Tapestry has truly become a community-wide resource that openly welcomes anyone desiring to find connection and encouragement for the adoption or foster care journey.?

In addition, Tapestry?s work is led and carried out by an incredible group of volunteers, many of whom benefited from the ministry in some way and now serve as a way to ?give back? to help other families.? And rather than charging participants to attend, Tapestry continues to offer nearly all events and activities (including its annual day-long conference) as well as most of its resources completely free-of-charge.

Still despite all of the growth and impact that Tapestry has had, the heart of the ministry remains the same.? Annie McClellan, a young adoptive mom that Tapestry began supporting five years and who now serves with her husband Scott on the Tapestry leadership team, puts it this way: ?Tapestry is a ministry committed to meeting the real needs of adoptive and foster families, being in community with them, and supporting them through the highs and lows of the journey. Wherever the adoption or foster care journey leads, Tapestry will be there.?

Over the years Tapestry has been blessed to walk alongside countless families.? Along the way we have seen miracle after miracle as families have been formed and lives have been transformed.? What began as a simple idea and a dream has grown into a reality that offers real help and true hope to families traveling the adoption and foster care journey.

Manning throws ill-advised pass in Broncos' loss

By PAT GRAHAM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 10:59 p.m. ET Jan. 12, 2013

DENVER (AP) - Usually more comfortable in the pocket, Peyton Manning scrambled to his right to avoid pressure.

Usually so accurate, the Denver Broncos quarterback threw a pass across his body - an ill-advised toss he's gotten away with a few times over his career.

This time, he wouldn't.

Late in the first overtime, Manning tried to thread the ball to Brandon Stokley, only to have the pass intercepted by Corey Graham. A few plays after switching sides to start the second extra period, Justin Tucker hit a 47-yard field goal to help the Baltimore Ravens rally for a 38-35 win in an AFC divisional game on a bitterly cold Saturday.

Like that, Manning was once again left out in the cold. He's now 0-4 in games in which the temperature at kickoff is less than 40 degrees.

Manning even wore gloves on each hand to fight off the frigid conditions as temperatures that started out at 13 degrees dipped into single-digits. He heated up, too, only to cool off at the end.

This loss may even sting a little more than any other for Manning. The Broncos were winning late in the game when Joe Flacco hit Jacoby Jones for a 70-yard TD with just 31 seconds left in regulation.

Soon after, the Ravens snapped the Broncos' 11-game winning streak and ended Manning's impressive comeback from four neck operations that kept him out all of last season.

"I accomplished a lot more this year than I thought I would have and I think the team exceeded expectations as well," Manning said.

To add insult, it was here, in this stadium, where Manning's predecessor, Tim Tebow, connected with Demaryius Thomas for a game-winning TD in overtime against Pittsburgh in the playoffs last season.

After Tucker's kick, Manning began a slow walk to the other side of the field, where he worked his way into a circle of reporters that surrounded Baltimore linebacker Ray Lewis. Once inside, he gave Lewis a quick hug before trudging off the field.

Lewis will play another week, his retirement party on hold.

Manning, well, his season is done. He made a costly throw at a costly time. Just like former Minnesota QB Brett Favre, who threw a bad pass in the NFC championship game against New Orleans three years ago that was intercepted and ultimately resulted in a Vikings loss.

"He (Manning) is one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time and for us to come in here and confuse him the way we did, and make the plays we did?" Lewis said. "We gave up two big special teams touchdowns, but the bottom line is, but we kept fighting."

The speedy Trindon Holliday had a big afternoon as he became the first player in the postseason to return both a kick and a punt for a touchdown.

And, still, it wasn't enough.

Manning finished 28 of 43 for 290 yards and three scores. But more memorable than those touchdowns will be his fumble and two picks.

Fumbles happen, especially when being sacked.

And that first interception? That happens, too - it was tipped and Graham returned it for a 39-yard score.

The other interception, though, that's a throw he's made a handful of times over his 15-year career, especially with good friend Stokley the one running the route.

One of Manning's most memorable completions in this comeback season was a TD toss at Carolina in November, where he rolled to his right, stopped and twisted, then threw across the field to Stokley.

NFL Films had Manning hooked up for sound that day. Coming off the field, he called that throw an example of "Rule No. 1 that you never do." But, Manning told Stokley, sometimes you throw caution to the wind.

This time, it didn't work out.

Now, Manning has an entire offseason to think about breaking "Rule No. 1."

"It's a grind," Manning said. "It does require a lot of work and a lot of energy. That's why it's disappointing, because of how much hard work and effort and time and extra meetings and extra workouts we put in to get to this point. That's part of it.

"You want it to go perfect and to win and keep going, but it's not the way it always works."

Washington bureaucrats reject public request to build Death Star due to excessive cost

The proposal to construct the Star Wars-inspired space station-cum-death ray was lodged in November last year through We the People, a recently-implemented system that allows ordinary Americans to petition the government with any request, providing it gets enough popular support.

The authors promised that building the Death Star would ?spur job creation in the fields of construction, engineering, space exploration, and more, and strengthen our national defense.?

The petition has collected 34,435 signatures, well above the 25,000 threshold that necessitates a response from the White House.

But despite endorsement from the public, the government has been reluctant to make the necessary investment in the pioneering space platform.

Titled ?This Isn?t the Petition Response You?re Looking For? and authored by Paul Shawcross, who oversees science and space departments at the White House, the official response gives three reasons for why the project isn?t viable:

? The construction of the Death Star has been estimated to cost more than $850,000,000,000,000,000. We?re working hard to reduce the deficit, not expand it.

? The Administration does not support blowing up planets.

? Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death Star with a fundamental flaw that can be exploited by a one-man starship?

Instead, Shawcross calls for Americans to revel in the existence of the rather more modest International Space Station, which although impressive, does not possess a death ray, or in fact weapons of any sort.

This is not the only time We the People has been used to push forward unlikely proposals. Recent petitions have called for British TV interviewer Piers Morgan to be deported for his gun control stance (more than 100,000 signatures) for Texas to secede (more than 120,000 signatories) and to recount the presidential election, which 68,000 petitioners claim Barack Obama won through a combination of fraud and administrative error.

We the People, which was launched in 2011 and has attracted in excess of 3 million signatures, has previously been criticized for allowing itself to be hijacked by attention seekers and for failing to turn any petitions into actual policies.

Nonetheless, at least one petition has yielded a positive reaction from the Administration. A request to ?Release the recipe for the Honey Ale home brewed at the White House? was promptly responded to with what appears to be a functional recipe.

New material harvests energy from water vapor

Friday, January 11, 2013

MIT engineers have created a new polymer film that can generate electricity by drawing on a ubiquitous source: water vapor.

The new material changes its shape after absorbing tiny amounts of evaporated water, allowing it to repeatedly curl up and down. Harnessing this continuous motion could drive robotic limbs or generate enough electricity to power micro- and nanoelectronic devices, such as environmental sensors.

"With a sensor powered by a battery, you have to replace it periodically. If you have this device, you can harvest energy from the environment so you don't have to replace it very often," says Mingming Ma, a postdoc at MIT's David H. Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research and lead author of a paper describing the new material in the Jan. 11 issue of Science.

"We are very excited about this new material, and we expect as we achieve higher efficiency in converting mechanical energy into electricity, this material will find even broader applications," says Robert Langer, the David H. Koch Institute Professor at MIT and senior author of the paper. Those potential applications include large-scale, water-vapor-powered generators, or smaller generators to power wearable electronics.

Other authors of the Science paper are Koch Institute postdoc Liang Guo and Daniel Anderson, the Samuel A. Goldblith Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and a member of the Koch Institute and MIT's Institute for Medical Engineering and Science.

Harvesting energy

The new film is made from an interlocking network of two different polymers. One of the polymers, polypyrrole, forms a hard but flexible matrix that provides structural support. The other polymer, polyol-borate, is a soft gel that swells when it absorbs water.

Previous efforts to make water-responsive films have used only polypyrrole, which shows a much weaker response on its own. "By incorporating the two different kinds of polymers, you can generate a much bigger displacement, as well as a stronger force," Guo says.

The film harvests energy found in the water gradient between dry and water-rich environments. When the 20-micrometer-thick film lies on a surface that contains even a small amount of moisture, the bottom layer absorbs evaporated water, forcing the film to curl away from the surface. Once the bottom of the film is exposed to air, it quickly releases the moisture, somersaults forward, and starts to curl up again. As this cycle is repeated, the continuous motion converts the chemical energy of the water gradient into mechanical energy.

Such films could act as either actuators (a type of motor) or generators. As an actuator, the material can be surprisingly powerful: The researchers demonstrated that a 25-milligram film can lift a load of glass slides 380 times its own weight, or transport a load of silver wires 10 times its own weight, by working as a potent water-powered "mini tractor." Using only water as an energy source, this film could replace the electricity-powered actuators now used to control small robotic limbs.

"It doesn't need a lot of water," Ma says. "A very small amount of moisture would be enough."

Generating electricity

The mechanical energy generated by the material can also be converted into electricity by coupling the polymer film with a piezoelectric material, which converts mechanical stress to an electric charge. This system can generate an average power of 5.6 nanowatts, which can be stored in capacitors to power ultra-low-power microelectronic devices, such as temperature and humidity sensors.

If used to generate electricity on a larger scale, the film could harvest energy from the environment ? for example, while placed above a lake or river. Or, it could be attached to clothing, where the mere evaporation of sweat could fuel devices such as physiological monitoring sensors. "You could be running or exercising and generating power," Guo says.

On a smaller scale, the film could power microelectricalmechanical systems (MEMS), including environmental sensors, or even smaller devices, such as nanoelectronics. The researchers are now working to improve the efficiency of the conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy, which could allow smaller films to power larger devices.

Toddler Fighting Fatal Brain Cancer; Family Hopeful | FOX17online ...

CALEDONIA, Mich.- For most families, the Christmas tree comes down after the first of the year, but Kelli and Brandon Greer?s will most likely stay up all year.

?I went to go take the Christmas tree down, the day after New Years, and I just looked at Brandon ?and said I can?t do it and he said don?t worry about it, you don?t have to do it.,? Kelli said.

The Greer?s fear this past Christmas will be their last with beautiful 19 month-old daughter Abigail who has a rare brain cancer called Ependymoma, which they have fought off once before. It was discovered on her 10 month birthday.

?The previous seven days she had been vomiting, throwing up, very tired and we had taken her to her pediatrician twice, and they had told us it was just a virus, she has the flu, we have to let it pass.? Brandon explained. Abby?s blood work, even came back fine.

After waking from a nap, Abby was lethargic and couldn?t keep her head up, so they Greers headed to the emergency room. One of the doctors at Helen DeVos felt the front part of Abby?s head, where her soft spot was, and noticed that it was a little puffy. They followed the doctor?s advice and underwent a CAT scan.

?To this day, an image I will never forget, when you look out the glass door of like the patients room, there?s a glass door, like where the doctors gather; we saw the huddle of doctors, and I knew, there was a problem.? Brandon said sadly.

The attendant told Kelli and Brandon, that it was cancer along with fluid on the brain, which would require her to be put into a coma so a stent could be inserted to drain it.

?That night we kissed her, and I promised her that I would never leave her.? a tearful Brandon said.

Three days later, Abby underwent a nearly 13 hour surgery to remove the mast, which was located at the base of her neck, near her brain stem. For 29 days, while Abby recovered, mommy and daddy never left their daughter, sleeping at the hospital. On April 26, little Abby was able to come home, cancer free. She started 30 rounds of radiation in May. Abby would have to undergo an MRI, quite regularly, to make sure the cancer did not come back.

?There was high hopes, because he got the whole tumor. But it?s one of those cancers that comes back regularly.? Brandon explained. Her MRIs in July and September came back perfect.

?I wanted Abby to be a sibling. I wanted Abby to be a big sister. I still want Abby to be a big sister. We found out, God?s blessing, we found out that we were pregnant in the beginning of November.? Brandon said.

With the good news, came the horrible, during Abby?s December 6th MRI.

?They told me her cancer had come back and that it was in her spine and her brain and I just cried and said no, no.? Kelli stated.

There were spots on different parts of her brain and now on her spine. Surgery was no longer an option; therefore, it is fatal. Abby is now undergoing another 25 rounds of radiation, with Thursday, Jan. 10th marking number 17. With a newborn on the way, doctors could not assure Kelli and Brandon what an oral form of chemo therapy would do to the baby.

?They are saying that they are hoping that the radiation that she?s going through now, will buy us a couple of more months.? Brandon said.

Brandon and Kelli have taken leaves from their jobs to spend every moment they can with Abby. A spaghetti dinner benefit has been set up for them. The event will take place from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on March 2, 2013 at Pietro?s Italian Restaurant in Grand Rapids.
