LONDON ? No one suspected the secretary.

Efficient, well-dressed and well-liked, Sue Harris was at the heart of the Sunday People, the smallest of Britain's weekly tabloids. She booked flights, reserved accommodation, and tallied expenses for the populist paper's dozen or so full-time reporters. A petite, 40-something south Londoner who'd spent most if not all of her working life at the tabloid, journalists there trusted her implicitly.

Maybe they shouldn't have.

In 1995 Harris was dismissed over an allegation that she'd been feeding her paper's juiciest scoops to the Piers Morgan-edited News of the World, betraying her co-workers for a weekly payoff of 250 pounds ? then worth about $375. Although People journalists had long believed there was a traitor in their midst, they were shocked when Harris was exposed.

"Everybody knew there was a mole," said a former senior journalist with the People. "We never thought the person we were looking for was her."

The journalist, who was there when Harris was fired, was among three former colleagues who recounted her story to The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because they still work in the media industry.

Harris' alleged spying on behalf of the News of the World wasn't unique, an AP investigation has found. Interviews with three more former journalists and published accounts suggest that Rupert Murdoch's flagship Sunday tabloid engaged in a pattern of payoffs aimed at rival newspaper employees.

The News of the World was closed in July as evidence of illegal conduct there became inescapable. Although accusations that the paper hacked into phones and corrupted police officers to win scoops have been widely aired, the paper's efforts to subvert rival newspaper employees have seen less attention.

American investigators are already examining whether the News of the World's parent company, New York-based News Corp., broke U.S. anti-corruption laws by bribing British officials. Legal experts now say that payments made to rival journalists could make it more difficult for the media conglomerate to defend itself against any potential prosecution.

The corporate espionage campaign also calls into question the ethics of Morgan, who edited the News of the World between 1994 and 1995 and who once boasted that having rivals on his payroll meant that he and his colleagues "always know exactly what our competitors are doing."

Story theft has long been a big worry for Britain's Sunday tabloids, who only get one shot a week at making an impression on their readership. Particular concern surrounds the "splash" ? the front page story which acts as an advertisement for a paper's journalism.

At the People as with other tabloids, journalists took extreme measures to keep a potential splash under wraps. Sources would be paid compensation in return for exclusive access or sequestered at out-of-the way hotels for days at a time to keep them away from rival reporters.

Keeping the splash secret was particularly important for the cash-strapped People. If the News of the World got wind of a story, the Murdoch tabloid's massive budget meant it could easily outbid the People for interview rights.

But no secret was safe from Harris, who spent years sitting a few feet from the People's senior editors. Former journalists say that, thanks to the weekly payments made by the News of the World, the People's powerful rival knew everything too.

The effect on reporters was devastating. A People journalist sent by plane to Edinburgh was disconsolate when he found a News of the World team on the same flight. A writer huddled with his source at an obscure hotel outside of London was shocked to discover his paper's biggest rival at the downstairs bar. A team of People reporters who'd spent days staking out the home of a young woman seethed when they saw their competitors walk up to the front door.

People journalists would routinely spend days putting together a splash only to be ambushed at the last minute by the News of the World, who would outbid them for the story. Suspicion grew as exclusives kept getting spoiled.

"It was a kind of frustrating paranoia," said a journalist who held a mid-ranking job at the paper at the time. "There had to be a mole. But everyone looked around the office and at who sat next to them, and no one believed it could be anyone there."

Something similar was happening at one of the People's sister papers, the Sunday Mirror, where reporter Chris House was accepting about 1,000 pounds a month to leak his colleagues' stories.

In his 2005 book, "The Insider," Morgan recalled one of the disclosures: The news that a popular British television presenter was having an affair.

Morgan said the Sunday Mirror had spent three months working on the story only to have it stolen out from under them the day before it was due to run.

"If I was their editor I'd want to top myself," he crowed, using British slang for "suicide."

It isn't clear when the News of the World began paying for rivals' stories, although Morgan's book suggests that the practice predated his installment as editor there. The senior journalist at the People said he was warned as far back as 1992 that there was a mole on the paper.

Morgan turned on his informants when he became editor of the Daily Mirror, which shares the same publisher, Trinity Mirror PLC, as the Sunday Mirror and the People. Now working for the other side, he said he gave the pair a month to stop taking bribes.

"Incredibly they had just carried on, so I fired them," he wrote.

House, who now lives in the English cathedral city of Winchester, declined comment when reached by the AP. Contact information for Harris couldn't be located, and attempts to trace her through her former colleagues were unsuccessful.

The loss of two of its informants didn't deter the News of the World. In 1999, Trinity Mirror threatened to sue the paper over an alleged attempt to bribe Sunday Mirror investigative correspondent Dennis Rice.

Rice turned down the bribe, and the matter was settled out of court amid claim and counter-claim. The Sunday Mirror's then-editor Colin Myler later fired off a letter to the Evening Standard complaining that "this is the third time the News of the World has offered money to Mirror Group employees for our confidential information."

A former News of the World reporter who worked at the paper through all three episodes said that bribery would have been "business as usual" at the newspaper.

"No one would have thought it was ethically dodgy," he said, speaking anonymously because he too still works in the media industry. "It was dog eat dog and whatever got results was welcomed."

Buying the loyalty of rival journalists would not have broken British bribery laws, which were only recently updated to cover payments made to competitors. Nor would they have run up against the U.S. Foreign Corrupt Practices Act ? which only applies to foreign officials.

But legal experts say that if a prosecution were brought under the act for bribing police, then the payments offered to House, Harris or Rice could be entered into evidence.

Previous misbehavior can be used "to prove certain things such as intent, motive, absence of mistake, or pattern," said Anthony Barkow, who directs New York University's Center on the Administration of Criminal Law.

Another expert said that past allegations of bribery "may go to corporate culture and `tone at the top.'"

"Practices like this as far back as the `90s undermine the argument that senior management wasn't aware," said Alexandra Wrage, the president of TRACE, an association that advises multinationals on anti-bribery compliance.

News Corp. declined comment on any of the allegations made in this article.

Piers Morgan, whose career has since taken him to a top spot as CNN's celebrity interviewer, also declined comment.

The 46-year-old's past is already under scrutiny thanks in part to suggestive statements he's made about listening in on other people's voicemails. Morgan has denied ordering anyone to hack a phone or knowingly publishing stories based on hacked information, but he was in charge at the News of the World when it was bribing people for information and freely acknowledged that the practice was wrong.

"It's a disgrace, of course, and totally unethical," he wrote. "But very handy."

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Warren Buffett is sending a clear signal that he believes Berkshire Hathaway's stock is undervalued by announcing a plan to repurchase stock for the first time since taking over the firm in 1965.

Berkshire said Monday that the company Buffett leads will repurchase its Class A and B shares anytime they are trading within 10 percent of book value.

Berkshire's Class A stock surged 5.3 percent, or $5,293, to $105,613 in morning trading after the announcement. Its more affordable Class B shares rose $3.98, or 6 percent, to $70.35.

Book value is a measure of a company's value that Buffett often cites because it is similar to the intrinsic value figure he calculates to determine if an investment is overpriced. At the end of June, Berkshire estimated its assets were worth $98,716 per Class A share after liabilities were deducted.

That estimate doesn't include Berkshire's $9 billion acquisition of specialty chemical maker Lubrizol that was completed earlier this month.

Buffett talked about repurchasing Berkshire stock once before in his 1999 annual letter, but never did buy back shares because the price improved after he talked about it being undervalued.

Buffett did not immediately respond to an interview request sent to his assistant Monday.

Last week, Berkshire's Class A shares dipped below $100,000 for the first time since January 2010 as worries about the economy weighed down the overall market.

Andy Kilpatrick, the stockbroker-author of "Of Permanent Value, the Story of Warren Buffett," said Buffett has always said he wants Berkshire stock to trade at a fair price, and this move signals that he didn't agree with the recent prices.

"He's saying we're undervalued, and I'm putting cash here," Kilpatrick said.

Berkshire didn't commit to buying a certain dollar amount of stock, but the Omaha-based company said it wouldn't repurchase stock if doing so would reduce its cash on hand below $20 billion.

But that doesn't seem to be an immediate concern because Berkshire had nearly $48 billion cash on hand at the end of June.

Birinyi Associates' researcher Rob Leiphart said the only other company with an open-ended buyback program like this is Exxon Mobil Corp., which announced its repurchase plan in 2000.

Berkshire's Class A shares set an all-time high of $151,650 in December 2007 before the recession.

The Class A stock remains the most expensive U.S. stock, but it has declined since February when it was trading above $131,000 before several major disasters generated losses for Berkshire's insurance units. Berkshire recorded $1.7 billion in insurance losses related to the March 11 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, the Feb. 22 New Zealand earthquake and flooding in Australia.

Berkshire owns roughly 80 subsidiaries, including clothing, furniture and jewelry firms, but its insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of the company's net income. It has major investments in such companies as Coca-Cola Co. and Wells Fargo & Co.

SKorean reporters detained by China near NKorea (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? Chinese authorities detained a group of South Korean journalists and others for a fourth day Friday on suspicion of spying while on a reporting trip near China's border with North Korea, officials in Seoul said.

The Chosun Ilbo newspaper first reported the detentions Friday, saying that four journalists from the newspaper JoongAng Ilbo, a researcher and a guide were taken into custody Tuesday in a military restricted zone near the Tumen River that marks the border.

Three South Korean Foreign Ministry officials confirmed that JoongAng Ilbo reporters were detained near the river, and said they were being held at a hotel. But they disputed parts of the Chosun Ilbo account, saying five people, not six, were detained, and they would not confirm the number of journalists nor whether they were caught inside a restricted military zone.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of efforts to secure the reporters' release. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman in Beijing said the agency was looking into the reports, but otherwise refused to comment. JoongAng Ilbo declined comment.

China is always touchy about border security and in the best of circumstances dislikes snooping by foreign reporters. The border with ally North Korea is particularly sensitive, with many North Koreans sneaking across to look for work, find food or flee poverty and repression.

One of the South Korean officials said the reporters were traveling on tourist visas. China requires foreign reporters to obtain journalist visas if they want to report inside the country and has expelled or jailed reporters working without proper credentials.

In 2009, American journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee were arrested on the North Korean side of the border for trespassing while reporting on the sex trade. Ex-Afghan leader's assassin waited days to see him (AP)

KABUL, Afghanistan ? An aide says the suicide bomber who killed former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani as he was trying to broker peace with the Taliban had waited in Kabul for days, insisting on meeting face-to-face with the ex-president.

Mohammad Ismail Qasemyar, the international relations adviser for Rabbani's peace council, said on Wednesday that the bomber had approached several council officials, telling them that he was an important figure in the Taliban insurgency and would only speak directly with Rabbani.

Qasemyar says the bomber stayed at a house used for council guests, waiting for Rabbani to return from a trip to Iran.

When the two finally met, Qasemyar says the bomber bowed his head near Rabbani's chest and detonated explosives hidden in his turban.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? The assassination of former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani in Kabul is dashing hopes for peace and raises fears of deteriorating security in Afghanistan just as foreign troops are starting to pull out.

Dozens of people gathered Wednesday at the Kabul home of Rabbani to pay their respects. The former president headed the government's peace council seeking reconciliation with insurgents to end the war.

He was killed Tuesday night by a suicide bomber posing as a Taliban peace envoy. NATO says another attacker also was involved.

No one has claimed responsibility for the killing, but many among the mourners blame the Haqqani network, a militant group based in Pakistan and affiliated with the Taliban and al-Qaida.

Pakistani officials have condemned the killing.

Santa Monica's Finest tells E! News Travolta's 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SL was jacked at about 3:46 p.m.from its parking spot on Berkeley Street.

The actor reported the car stolen after he walked out after 10 minutes to find it gone. There were no witnesses to the theft, according to a police spokesperson, but investigators are on the case.

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Want to know why video game stocks pop or drop? Check the reviews.

For years, investors have turned to video game reviews to help make buy or sell decisions, moving the share prices of some video game companies higher or lower.

They consult the website Metacritic, which tracks a large amount of reviews and comes up with an average score, as well as reviews from top video game outlets such as News Corp?s IGN.com and GameStop Corp?s Game Informer.

And with the holiday shopping season approaching, when companies in the $ 64 billion video game industry generate the bulk of their sales and earnings, investors will be scouring reviews more closely than usual.

?The review scores are a first indicator of how a game will perform commercially,? said Jesse Divnich, a consultant and analyst for EEDAR, a research firm focused on the video game industry. ?Investors will keep a close eye on them to measure potential success of a game.?

Shares of Electronic Arts fell 6 percent last October after review scores for ?Medal of Honor,? a military game in which EA had invested millions of dollars, came in below rival shooter games such as Microsoft?s ?Halo? and Activision Blizzard?s, ?Call of Duty.?

In March, ?Homefront,? a first-person shooter game from THQ Inc received weaker-than-expected reviews and scored 75 out of a possible 100 on the website Metacritic. Analysts called the scores disastrous, sending THQ shares down 20 percent that day.

Just as negative reviews can harm video game stocks, positive reviews can boost them. Shares of Take-Two Interactive surged 10 percent over three sessions and reached a 52-week high in May after its crime solving game, ?L.A. Noire,? received glowing reviews and achieved a high score on Metacritic.

One of the reasons why video game reviews carry so much weight with investors is because avid gamers tend to rely on them to help make purchasing decisions.

Case in point: Eric Choi, a 23-year-old Chicago resident who buys between 10 and 15 games a year. After having fond memories of playing the action shooter title ?Duke Nukem? growing up, he was happy to spend $ 60 on the latest edition of the game, which Take-Two released in June. That was until the reviews changed his mind.

?When the reviews came in about how it was apparently a terrible game, it influenced my opinion and my decision not to buy,? Choi said.

Investors also took note. Take-Two shares fell as much as 5 percent on June 14 after the game scored in the low 50s out of 100 on Metacritic.

Reviews have become so influential on sales, Divnich said, that his firm has been hired by major video game companies to write mock ones so that they can anticipate what real reviews might say.

Divnich, who said he consults for about 90 percent of video game companies, brought in a former video game critic from a top website to both play the game and write the review, which is designed to look like a review coming from a large video game publication. The reviews are then sent to video game makers and never appear in print.

?We?ll type up a review as if it would be in a magazine,? he said. ?It?s critical for them to know how well their game is going to be received before they launch a title.?

While Frank Gibeau, president of EA Labels, agrees that game critics and reviews play an important role in consumers? buying decisions, he also said that they are not always indicative of a game?s success.

?There is a correlation between the critical index and sales of any given game, but there are exceptions to the rule ? games that don?t score high marks in reviews but sell well and others that critics love but gamers ignore,? Gibeau said.

For example, THQ has said ?Homefront,? which received poor reviews, may end up selling 3 million copies, which would make it a commercial success.

THQ and Take-Two declined to comment on this story.

A poor review of a highly anticipated game may not be enough to convince an investor to sell off shares of a company entirely either, said Ted Pollak, portfolio manager of the San Francisco-based Electronic Entertainment Fund, which focuses on video game investments.

Besides reviews, Pollak does other research to figure out if a game might sell well, including beta testing or monitoring early versions of games. He also considers the development teams behind the game and even looks at what type of technology was used in its creation.

?If I was in a situation where I needed to trim a position, reviews could have an influence. But I wouldn?t completely dump a company because one game didn?t score well,? he said.

HOLIDAY SPOTLIGHT ON REVIEWS

When publishers release their biggest games of the year ? the games that are expected to have a major impact on a company?s bottom line ? the importance of reviews is heightened.

?If ?Call of Duty,? which is half of Activision?s earnings, gets a poor review this year, it will be bad,? said Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter, referring to the possible impact on Activision?s stock.

Activision will release the latest version of the game, its biggest video game franchise on consoles, in November. Last year, the game set a new record by selling 5.6 million copies, or $ 360 million worth, on its first day.

Pachter says he considers review scores on websites Metacritic and Gamerankings.com, which are both owned by CBS Corp, for his investment recommendations.

EA is mounting a challenge to Activision with its own first-person shooter game, ?Battlefield 3,? which comes out in October.

Divnich, from EEDAR, expects Activision?s game to sell twice as many copies as EA?s game. But, he added, ?if EA can gain higher review scores, it shifts the momentum in EA?s favor.?

Officials: Suspected US drone crashes in Pakistan (AP)

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan ? Pakistani intelligence officials say a suspected U.S. drone has crashed in northwestern Pakistan near the Afghan border.

The officials say the drone crashed Saturday night near Jangara village in the South Waziristan tribal area and that the Taliban got hold of the drone debris.

The officials said Sunday that they learned of the crash by intercepting Taliban radio communications. It is unclear what caused the crash.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

The U.S. Embassy did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The U.S. normally does not discuss the covert CIA-run drone program in Pakistan.

Lawsuit: Deutsche Bank 'mommy tracked' me

NEW YORK?? A Deutsche Bank AG vice president filed a gender bias lawsuit accusing the German bank of denying her pay and promotions, and trying to demote her because she took maternity leave.

Kelley Voelker, who works in New York in a hedge fund group, said she has never been promoted in her 13 years at Deutsche Bank despite being qualified to become a director.

Voelker, who is in her mid-40s, sued the bank in papers filed Monday in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

"We take these allegations very seriously and are currently reviewing the complaint," a Deutsche Bank spokeswoman said.

In her complaint, Voelker said she rejected her boss' urging that she take a "reduced role" after her return from maternity leave in May 2010.

Upon her return, she said, Deutsche Bank directed bigger accounts to a male colleague, slashed her bonus, and tried to demote her to a "vague" marketing job. The bank retracted the demotion after her lawyers complained, she said.

"Plaintiff was retaliated against and ultimately 'mommy-tracked' for her decision to take maternity leave," the lawsuit said.

Seeks compensatory. punitive damages
The lawsuit seeks compensatory and punitive damages, among other remedies. Voelker said she also filed a discrimination case with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

Like many other lawsuits alleging gender bias on Wall Street, the complaint also provides illustrations of alleged "hostile and degrading" conduct by bank employees to women.

In one instance, at a 2009 meeting where Voelker questioned a decision by a supervisor, her boss said: "I'd watch your step -- she's pregnant," the complaint said.

The law firm Thompson Wigdor represents Voelker. That firm also represents Nafissatou Diallo, a hotel maid who accused former International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn in a civil lawsuit of attempting to rape her. Criminal sexual assault charges against Strauss-Kahn were dropped last month.

Goldman Sachs Group Inc last November settled for an undisclosed amount a lawsuit by a former vice president who said the bank unlawfully fired her while she was on maternity leave, according to her lawyer Douglas Wigdor, who also represents Voelker.

Last month, U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska in Manhattan dismissed an EEOC lawsuit accusing financial news company Bloomberg LP of a pattern of discrimination against pregnant women and mothers returning from maternity leave, even if there were cases of individual bias. Bloomberg said that lawsuit lacked merit.

The case is Voelker v. Deutsche Bank AG, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 11-06362.
