5 SECURITY TIPS TO KEEP WINDOWS VIRUS FREE | E-Tech Explorer ...

Here are some of my tips to keep your windows virus free from spyware, adware, hijackers and many more viruses waiting to enter your windows.

1.Enable Windows Firewall

A firewall is software or hardware that checks information coming from the Internet or a network, and then either blocks it or allows it to pass through to your computer, depending on your firewall settings.

A firewall can help prevent hackers or malicious software (such as worms) from gaining access to your computer through a network or the Internet. A firewall can also help stop your computer from sending malicious software to other computers, help protect your PC from hackers and malicious software

By default windows firewall is always enable, if not you can enable by going to control panel settings on windows.

2.Install Antivirus software

Antivirus or anti-virus software is used to prevent, detect, and remove malware, including but not limited to computer viruses, computer worm, trojan horses, spyware and adware
You can find free antivirus available on web or?click here?to list some of them. if you are not satisfied with free versions you can buy?premium version for better security. just installing antivirus will not work, antivirus software must be updated for better virus detection and security.

3.Windows Defender (Optional)

Windows Defender is software that helps protect your computer against pop-ups, slow performance, and security threats caused by spyware and other unwanted software by detecting and removing known spyware from your computer. Windows Defender features Real-Time Protection, a monitoring system that recommends actions against spyware when it?s detected, minimizes interruptions, and helps you stay productive.

4.Disable Autorun/Autoplay feature

AutoPlay begins reading from a drive as soon as you insert media into the drive. Therefore, the Setup file of programs and the music on audio media start immediately. Before Windows XP SP2, AutoPlay was disabled by default on removable drives, such as the floppy disk drive (but not the CD drive), and on network drives.

Autorun commands are generally stored in Autorun.inf files. These commands enable applications to start, start installation programs, or start other routines. In versions of Windows that are earlier than Windows Vista, when media that contains an Autorun command is inserted, the system automatically executes the program without requiring user intervention. Because code may be executed without user?s knowledge or consent, users may want to disable this feature because of security concerns.

Why disable autorun/autoplay feature?
as explained above autorun/autoplay feature enable applications to start, run installation programs and also virus infected applications automatically, Below is virus deatails which uses windows autorun/autoplay feature to enter your get access to your pc and infect your windows files
Name : Worm:W32/Autorun
Virus.Win32.Autorun
Aliases : W32/Autorun.worm (McAfee)
Category: Malware
Type: Worm
Platform: W32
Variants in the Worm:W32/AutoRun family are worms that spread by copying themselves into the root directories of hard drives and other writable media such as USB memory sticks.
These worms create an autorun.inf file in the root directories of drives they want to infect.
The autorun.inf includes the name and path of the actual worm executable.
When an infected media device (such as a CD, DVD or USB drive) is inserted into the computer, the autorun.inf and consequently the actual malicious program is automatically executed.
In addition to drives on the local computer, an Autorun worm can also spread to remote computers by infecting shared network drives.

How to disable all Autorun features in Windows
1.Click Start, type Gpedit.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
2.Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Autoplay Policies.
3.In the Details pane, double-click Turn off Autoplay.
4.Click Enabled, and then select All drives in the Turn off Autoplay box to disable Autorun on all drives.
5.Restart the computer.

5. Use Google Chrome for Browsing Internet

Google Chrome includes features to help protect you and your computer from malicious websites as you browse the web. Chrome uses technologies such as Safe Browsing, sandboxing, and auto-updates to help protect you against phishing and malware attacks.

Safe Browsing
Chrome will show you a warning message before you visit a site that is suspected of containing malware or phishing.
A phishing attack takes place when someone masquerades as someone else to trick you into sharing personal or other sensitive information with them, usually through a fake website. Malware, on the other hand, is software installed on your machine often without your knowledge, and is designed to harm your computer or potentially steal information from your computer.
With Safe Browsing technology enabled in Chrome, if you encounter a website suspected of containing phishing or malware as you browse the web, you will see a warning page like the one below. Learn more about how Safe Browsing works.

Sandboxing
Sandboxing helps prevent malware from installing itself on your computer or using what happens in one browser tab to affect what happens in another. The sandbox adds an additional layer of protection to your browser by protecting against malicious web pages that try to leave programs on your computer, monitor your web activities, or steal private information from your hard drive.

Auto-updates
To make sure that you are protected by the latest security updates, Chrome checks for updates regularly to make sure that it?s always kept up-to-date. The update check ensures that your version of Chrome is automatically updated with the latest security features and fixes without any action required on your part.
