Rays keep White Sox sliding

CHICAGO (AP) - The math is there for the Tampa Bay Rays to see and despite a 10-4 victory Saturday over the slumping Chicago White Sox, they know pulling out a wild card berth when trailing by three with four to play is a monumental assignment.

Of course, they didn't clinch a playoff spot last season until the final day. So, keep playing.

"We have to believe we're going to get the help while we take care of our own business. We're 1-0 on Saturday, let's go 1-0 on Sunday," manager Joe Maddon said. "I'm like the biggest scoreboard watcher, but at the end of the day I can't worry about that."

For the White Sox, it's just as difficult. They trail Detroit by two in the AL Central with four left and must find a way Sunday to beat Rays ace David Price as he goes for his 20th win.

"We have to win every game and hope Detroit loses a couple," said Chicago's Alex Rios, who had two of the White Sox's four hits allowed Saturday by Tampa Bay starter Matt Moore and two relievers. "That's what has to happen."

Moore allowed one hit in 5 1-3 shutout innings, Matt Joyce came off the bench to homer twice and Jeff Keppinger and Chris Gimenez also connected Saturday.

Tampa Bay, with nine wins in 10 games, remained three games out of the second wild card behind Oakland, which beat Seattle 7-4 in 10 innings Saturday.

The White Sox, who've dropped 9 of 11, fell two games behind Detroit in the AL Central when the Tigers defeated the Twins 6-4

After Sunday, the Rays go home for three against Baltimore and the White Sox head to Cleveland. Detroit goes to Kansas City, while Oakland has three at home against the AL West leading Rangers.

"If we win out, we're hoping the way their (A's) schedule is - a chip and a chair kind of thing -that's all we need," Gimenez said.

Moore (11-11), 0-4 in his previous five starts, retired the first 13 batters before Rios singled with one out in the fifth. Dayan Viciedo followed with a walk but Moore got out of it on a fly ball and a strikeout of Tyler Flowers.

"I never felt that there was anything wrong, especially physically. And that's where a little bit of the questions came from at this stage of the season and with my age," said Moore, like Sale, a young lefty with a big future. "That's a natural question with my velocity being down a little bit. But I felt like I went out there and competed with what I had."

With the White Sox trailing 10-0 in the eighth, pinch-hitter Orlando Hudson hit a grand slam off reliever Chris Archer - Chicago's fourth hit all day.

Sale (17-8), who has pitched 192 innings in his first year as a starter, lasted just 3 1-3 innings, his shortest start of the season. He gave up seven hits and was charged with five runs while walking three and striking out seven.

He said fatigue was not a factor whatsoever.

"That was terrible. That was a disgrace," Sale said.

"I did nothing to help the team win, put guys in positions that they shouldn't have been in. To go out and have your starter go three innings, that's a recipe for a disaster pretty much every time. Like I said before, just didn't do my job. Team needed me and I didn't pull it out for them. Just a frustrating day."

Sale beat Moore 2-1 at Tropicana Field on May 28 when he struck out 15 to Moore's 10, but this time he wasn't sharp from the outset, struggling with his control.

"When he doesn't locate, I think that was the biggest thing for him today," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "He was just not in the zone enough. It was just one of those, you don't expect that out of him but it is late in the year and stuff can happen. Other than that we stunk."

The Rays had two runners on in both the first and second innings but Sale used his strikeout pitch to escape - he had five in the first two frames.

But B.J. Upton drew a leadoff walk in third and raced home on Ben Zobrist's double into the left-field corner. Evan Longoria lined out, but Keppinger hit his ninth homer, just over the fence in left-center to make it 3-0.

Upton's RBI single in the fourth made it 4-0 and finished the young White Sox ace. Longoria added a run-scoring single off reliever Brian Omogrosso with Upton thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Gimenez hit his first homer of the season and sixth of his major league career, leading off the sixth against Deunte Heath for a six-run cushion.

NOTES: Moore's fourth strikeout of the game in the fifth was his 175th of the season, setting the Rays' rookie record. Scott Kazmir had 174 in 2005. ... White Sox leadoff hitter Alejandro De Aza was scratched from the lineup with flu-like symptoms and replaced by Dewayne Wise. ... Price (19-5), who could become the first 20-game winner in Tampa Bay history, will be opposed by Chicago's Jose Quintana (6-5) on Sunday.

A Delightful Post from CONTRARY BRIN - Pilant's Business Ethics ...

Why the Candidates Should (But Won?t) Stipulate

Take the day in 1992 when both Republican Senator Warren Rudman and Democrat Paul Tsongas made headlines declaring that everybody was at fault for the country?s fiscal condition at the time, from then-President Bush to the democrat-controlled Congress, to the American people. Responsible economists later credited Rudman and Tsongas for spurring reforms that helped lead to the Clinton era surpluses.

Around the same time, retired senator and conservative eminence gris Barry Goldwater denounced the followers of ?migr? philosopher Leo Strauss ? so-called ?neocons? ? for hijacking Goldwater?s beloved movement over cliffs of romantic delusion. A more recent example of post retirement candor came When G.W. Bush?s ex-Treasury Secretary, Paul O?Neill, revealed a swamp of backroom dealings and ineptitude, explaining that he was "old and rich" and unafraid to speak his mind. On the other side, some claim that Senator Joe Lieberman really came into his own when he ran as an independent, shrugging off party discipline (if such a thing exists, among democrats.)

CONTRARY BRIN

The article goes on to point out that candor is almost suicidal under the rules of our current system. Excellent thought. What I found more interesting was Brin?s awareness of Leo Strauss, the man behind the curtain of much of the modern Neoconservative movement. I wouldn?t have expected a scientist to have read so deeply into politics.

Yes, Strauss is mentioned in the histories you can find on the web about Neoconservatism but few point out his critical role in the movement, nor do they emphasize the manipulative nature of his teaching. The articles talk about Strauss teaching about a return to Classical values ? this is utter nonsense, Strauss was designing a new political elite from his students, manipulative and power hungry. We will be dealing with his minions for decades to come. He planted the dragon seeds that bedevil our foreign policy even today. And they will be pulling many other strings as well.

So, Mr. Brin has impressed me and I wish him well. I think we share many of the same thoughts.

Work From Home Business Tips And Strategies That Work | Make ...

Work From Home Business Tips And Strategies That Work

While having a home-based business sounds appealing, it can also be intimidating at the same time. But, how do you begin? How do you make it work? There are a lot of questions that need answered. This article was written just for people like you. It provides clear direction on how to successfully run a online business.

Many home business owners gather together online. Look around the Internet for forums or message boards where people in your business swap strategies. Reading about the experiences of other home business enterprise owners can assist you in many ways. You can learn more about your business from mentors on these forums.

Always write down what you spend on a daily basis, as well as other expenses that can impact your home business enterprise. Make sure you stay on top of record keeping so you can get the most out of your tax deductions and also to help if you are audited.

Be sure to keep an open line of communication with your customers without going overboard. Let customers opt into updates through newsletters or an e-mail list. Send them updates on your business, or let them know about ongoing discounts and specials. However, do not abuse their trust by overwhelming them with a constant barrage of messages.

You must have the trust and support of your loved ones and family before you consider starting a home-based business. Managing a work from home business can be tough, a bit stressful and very time consuming. It will not be as successful as you want it to be if your family is not supportive, or open to giving you private time to work.

Make sure you understand your production costs on homemade items. Two times the cost price is the basic mark-up for wholesale. Usually, standard retail is double the price of a wholesale item. A fair price-point should adequately support you, but be well within the comfort zone of your customers.

If you are starting a new home-based business, then you need an effective website. This can get the word out about your business to a larger crowd of people, and consequently deliver many new customers. Getting a website up and running will be made easier when a good web developer is hired.

It?s always appealing to be nice about payments with customers when you first start out, but this is a bad business model. Let your customers know up front, and in writing, when payment is expected, along with any fees for late payments.

When you operate a business from your home, you?re going to be getting a great deal of phone calls. You should probably get an extra phone line or two. You can always turn off the ringer on the phone if you are not available to take calls.

Support yourself and your business with online forums visited by other people who have home businesses. There are many online resources for those that own a online business, and the information on these sites is valuable. Here, you can find people who are going through the same issues as you and you can share and learn from them as you navigate your way through the business world.

Make your online business fit into your family schedule. If it interferes with your family life too much, you might want to consider another work from home business.

Be patient. You should not expect your home based business to blossom the second you set it up. A home business doesn?t happen overnight, but with time and effort, you will gain the experience to make it a success. By putting your mind to it and making sure you are both patient and consistent when you run your business, you will reap the rewards of being a successful work from home business owner.

By obtaining a checking account for your business, you will be able to see all of the outgoing expenses and also keep track of how much money is coming in. Business expenses and orders should be transacted using this account. This way, you have a detailed record of all money that flows through your business. It also helps to have a credit card that you use solely for business expenses.

You should deposit any payments you receive immediately. You should make your deposits daily, instead of weekly or monthly. You are less likely to lose money if you don?t let the check sit too long. To be on the safe site, deposit checks with a human teller as opposed to using an ATM machine, just to be sure that your money gets safely deposited into your account.

Organize your business contracts into one place, this way they are easily available whenever you need to look them over when speaking with a client. It also helps to keep a file containing all of your service provider contracts for services such as internet, phone and cable, so they?re easily found if you have any type of issue come up.

You should always determine how much start up capital will be required to start your home business enterprise. Home businesses are cheaper to run than ones run at an office, but you do have to still have capital. You can avoid losing money running your home business if you can figure out how much your business will cost you to run.

Make yourself accessible by email, telephone or regular mail. Keep detailed records of people who buy your questions and if they inquired about them prior to purchase. You can then track if your answers influenced their decision to buy your product. Keep in mind your actions, and keep doing it if it worked the first time!

As was mentioned earlier in this article, a home based business can be both appealing and intimidating. Hopefully you have gleaned some good information and advice from the tips shared in this article. Put that advice into action, and watch as things begin to work more smoothly for your work from home business

Android Embraces, iPhone 5 Passes on Near-Field Communication Data Sharing

Conspicuously absent on the iPhone 5, near-field communication (NFC) enables smart phones to share purchasing and security data with a tap--a feature that has surged on the Android platform

The map rift with Google may not be Apple's biggest misstep with the iPhone 5. Instead, it might be the company's decision to exclude near-field communication (NFC). Most major smart phone?makers?including Samsung, Nokia and HTC?are backing the technology for its ability to turn their devices into mobile wallets, with which users can make purchases and digitally store boarding passes and coupons. As phone-makers, retailers and credit card companies work out the feasibility of NFC as a gateway to facilitating commerce, others see the technology as opening doors?literally.

NFC-enabled smart phones can function like the badges that many people swipe en route to their offices every morning. A key difference between NFC and the radio-frequency chips embedded in employee ID badges is NFC's two-way communication capability, making it a more versatile tool for security.

Two companies are testing how NFC might improve employee access to their facilities: Good Technology, which sells mobile data security software, and Netflix, the subscription-based entertainment content provider. The California-based companies recently wrapped up several-week-long pilot programs to see whether it makes sense to replace employee building-access photo badges and key fobs with NFC-enabled smart phones. A small sample of employees received Samsung GALAXY S III handsets loaded with an app that automatically confirmed their identities at NFC-enabled security checkpoints.

NFC uses electromagnetic radio fields to allow two devices to exchange data in either direction when passed within four or five centimeters of one another. Radio-frequency identification (RFID), by comparison, works from several meters away, but information moves only unidirectionally?for example from an E-ZPass tag on a windshield to a tollbooth reader.

Although much larger and heavier than photo badges, the GALAXY phones used at Good Technology and Netflix ostensibly would provide increased security because they can be PIN-protected?if the device were lost or stolen, the average person without hacking skills would not be able to access information stored on it.

"Having an authentication credential on a phone is more secure than a badge or another physical access token because the only security I have on that is my picture," says Michael Mahan, Good Technology's senior vice president of special markets. "If I lose my badge, someone else could fairly easily pick it up and use it to get past security."

As part of the test project, Mahan also equipped his own office with an NFC-enabled lock to control access when he was traveling. In addition to allowing Mahan to grant office access to specific employees remotely, he could also pull data from the NFC system that showed who had used his office, and when.

At both companies most of the employees liked the prospect of simply waving a smart phone over an NFC reader so much, they said they would be willing to load the app on their personal handsets if they could not get shiny new GALAXY phones from their employers. More than 106 million NFC-enabled Google Android phones shipped in 2011, according to research firm IHS iSuppli. NFC support can in some cases be added to a smart phone by installing an NFC-compatible SIM card or microSD card.

Although both Good and Netflix plan to extend NFC testing to additional employees, some concerns remain, including whether adding the NFC app to someone's personal smart phone would prematurely drain the battery if the app is left on for an extended period of time. NFC is designed to use only a small amount of energy, but a smart phone with a dead battery would defeat the purpose of using the device as a security badge?or anything else.

Apple has not left its customers out in the cold when it comes to short-range communications that might someday be used for purchases or security. Instead of NFC, the company has (since the debut of its iPhone 4S in 2011) endorsed Bluetooth 4.0, which includes a low-energy version of the wireless radio technology that is a bit slower than NFC but has a much greater range (about 50 meters). The new iOS 6 mobile operating system features a new app?Passbook?designed to use Bluetooth LE (low energy) for data exchange. As with NFC, the key challenge now is getting retailers and other businesses to develop apps as well as buy readers and other equipment that can take advantage of the technology.

Yosemite workers' blood examined for hantavirus clues

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Public health officials have begun examining blood samples and questionnaire results from dozens of Yosemite National Park workers who volunteered for a study designed to shed light on an unprecedented outbreak of deadly hantavirus.

This week's screening, which involved 96 workers, is the latest effort by officials to uncover clues about the rare, mouse-borne lung disease that has infected at least nine park visitors and killed three since June.

"This is a unique opportunity to learn more about potential exposure to hantavirus from the people who lived and worked in close proximity to this cluster of cases," park spokesman John Quinley said Thursday.

One aim is to help researchers design a study of the California park's more than 2,500 workers in a search for clues about how the virus infects people and how to prevent it.

Among the lingering questions over the outbreak is why hantavirus infected park visitors while sparing employees.

All but one of the nine infected visitors stayed in Curry Village in double-walled, insulated tent cabins later found to be infested with deer mice. The tiny, white-bellied mice carry the airborne virus in their droppings, urine and saliva.

The park closed the infested tent cabins at the end of August, after learning of two of the hantavirus deaths.

This week's screening will examine park workers' blood for antibodies signaling exposure to the hantavirus. Employees also answered questions about where they live, their contact with mice, their job duties and their hantavirus training, Quinley said.

"We've had a lot of employees go through hantavirus training," he said. "We're interested in knowing if the training works."

The voluntary study is part of a broader scientific effort that will include the first whole-genome sequencing for the hantavirus strain that struck Yosemite over the summer. It marked the biggest cluster of cases since the disease was first identified in the United States in 1993.

At that time, when hantavirus pulmonary syndrome infected healthy young adults in the Four Corners region of Utah, Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico, Navajo elders linked the outbreak to an abundance of pine nuts and an explosion of mice coming out for the feast.

Since then, more than 600 Americans have been diagnosed with hantavirus pulmonary syndrome. The incurable disease kills more than a third of those infected.

To date, humans have never been known to transmit the virus. People can inhale the hantavirus when mice droppings mix with dust, especially in confined, poorly ventilated spaces.

Sweden's H&M says Q3 dented by late summer heat

STOCKHOLM (AP) ? Swedish fashion retailer Hennes and Mauritz announced Thursday plans to ramp up its expansion in the coming months, even though problems associated with Europe's debt crisis and a heat wave in a number of its key markets capped earnings in the third quarter.

The Stockholm-headquartered group posted a net profit of 3.6 billion kronor ($549 million) in the three months between June and August, up just under 1 percent from 3.59 billion kronor in the year-ago period. Revenues rose to 33.57 billion kronor from 31.51 billion kronor.

The group ? the world's second-largest clothing retailer in terms of sales after Spain's Inditex, the owner of Massimo Dutti and Zara ? said its performance was dented by economic difficulties in many European countries, a late-summer heat wave in much of Europe as well as currency fluctuations. However, some relief was provided by cheaper cotton prices.

"Conditions for the fashion retail industry continued to be challenging in many markets in the third quarter ? both as regards the weather and the macroeconomic climate, with austerity measures and restrained consumption," CEO Karl-Johan Persson said, adding that lower than expected sales could "primarily" be blamed on the heat wave.

The company's share price dropped 5.3 percent to 236.50 kronor in early trading on the Stockholm stock exchange.

Even so, the group said it continues to grab market share and revealed plans to open 300 new stores this year, up from a previously forecast 275.

But H&M has delayed the launch of its online shop in the United States to the middle of 2013 instead of the second half of this year. The company said it simply needs more time to prepare that offering.

It also said it plans to launch a new fashion brand, & Other Stories, in the first half of next year, which will be located in separate stores. The clothes will focus more on quality and will be higher priced than its normal fashion lines.

Daniel Ovin, an analyst at CAI Cheuvreux Nordic in Stockholm, said H&M's third quarter performance was a "disappointment," especially with regard to the fall in the company's gross margin to 58.2 percent from 58.6 percent.

"I would have thought that the lower cotton prices would have helped there," he said.

Romney: ?My heart aches? for struggling Americans

(Alex Wong/Getty Images)WESTERVILLE, Ohio?Mitt Romney kicked off a day of campaigning in this battleground state by insisting his "heart aches" for struggling Americans and that he is better prepared than President Barack Obama to help those who are "hurting" under the tough economy.

Speaking at a rally located in a swing district just outside Columbus, Romney kept repeating his empathy for people out of work and trying to pay their bills?insisting that he will do his "very best to help" those in need "when I am president."

"I've been across this country, and my heart aches for the people I've seen," Romney told a crowd of several hundred people here. "There are so many in our country that are hurting right now. I want to help them."

Relating the story of an unemployed woman he met at a rally on Tuesday, Romney insisted over and over that he has "what it takes to get the economy going again."

"I care about the people in America," he said. "And the difference between me and President Obama is I know what to do, and I will do what it takes to get this economy going."

Romney's remarks came as yet another public poll found him losing significant ground to Obama in Ohio, which has been considered a must-win state for his campaign. A New York Times/CBS News/Quinnipiac poll released Wednesday found Obama leading Romney by 10 points, 53 percent to 43 percent. It came on the heels of a Washington Post poll released Tuesday that found Obama leading Romney by 8 points in Ohio.

Top Romney aides have downplayed the public polling?suggesting their internal numbers remain close. But Romney's message on the stump Wednesday seemed to be informed by findings in the latest round of surveys, including stats from the NYT/CBS/Quinnipiac poll showing that he still holds an advantage over Obama when it comes to who would be best equipped to handle the growing federal deficit.

Campaigning in a high school gym here, Romney spoke against the backdrop of a constantly updating national debt clock?a prop that hasn't been used at his rallies for a while. He spoke at length about why the growing deficit is a major crisis for the country?one, he claimed, that Obama is ignoring.

Highlighting the nation's $16 trillion in debt, Romney said of Obama, "If he were re-elected, I can assure you, it would be almost $20 trillion debt."

Looking to offer context, Romney added, "What is a trillion? It's a thousand billions."

Romney also called for efforts to "reform our tax system"?but at the same time, he seemed to downplay the idea of instituting major tax relief should he be elected president.

"Small businesses most typically pay taxes at the individual tax rate. And so our individual income taxes are the ones I want to reform. Make them simpler. I want to bring the rates down," Romney said.

But, he added, "Don't be expecting a huge cut in taxes because I'm also going to lower deductions and exemptions. But by bringing rates down we will be able to let small businesses keep more of their money so they can hire more people."

Amid criticism from members of his own party that he hasn't had any "fire in the belly" on the trail, Romney seemed more passionate on the stump than he's been in weeks.

Ahead of his arrival onstage, aides played for the crowd a powerful biographical video of Romney that first aired during the Republican National Convention. The video featured interviews with Romney's wife, Ann, and their five sons. Those in the gym seemed captivated by the clip. The video has been the subject of questions among Republicans lately about why the Romney campaign isn't doing more to broadcast it throughout swing states, where polls show voters are still skeptical about Romney personally.

Romney's move to emphasize his compassion with voters here came as his campaign continues to do damage control over the candidate's suggestion in a secretly taped video at a May fundraiser that Obama supporters?which he calculated to be "47 percent" of the country?see themselves as victims and are too dependent on the government.

Ahead of his rally, the Romney campaign released an ad featuring the candidate speaking directly to the camera about "compassion" and his desire to help the middle class.

Joining Romney onstage was golf legend Jack Nicklaus, who is from the area. He offered up a full-throated endorsement of the GOP candidate, arguing that people "want us to be like America to be like we were."

Romney would "ignite a real recovery" if elected, Nicklaus said.

Mozilla Ignite names brainstorming round winners and opens development rounds

Today, an open innovation challenge called Mozilla Ignite announced eight winning ideas for innovative applications that offer a glimpse of what the Internet's future might look like--and what the lives of Americans may look like as well.

Funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and hosted by Mozilla, the challenge called for stellar application, or "app," ideas from anywhere in the world that would advance national priorities such as health care, public safety, clean energy and transportation. This brainstorming round received more than 300 submissions examined by 38 expert judges, who awarded the eight winning teams prizes ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.

Also today, Mozilla Ignite enters the first of three development rounds inviting developers everywhere to make these winning app ideas and any other big ideas a reality.

The Mozilla Ignite Challenge, launched in June, is part of the Administration's US Ignite Initiative, a coordinated effort to spark next generation public sector applications.

During Mozilla Ignite's brainstorming round, the public was invited to imagine applications that make use of ultra-fast and deeply programmable new networks, such as the NSF-funded Global Environment for Networking Innovation project, or GENI, which is some 250 times faster than networks available today.

"It's important to realize that with any new technology the point isn't just to create technology for its own sake," said Will Barkis, project manager of Mozilla Ignite. "The goal is to build something that has impact. After the challenge was announced, the response was exciting and encouraging, not just in terms of the number of submissions but in quality and creativity and impact embodied in each. We were blown away by the visionary ideas that were truly outside of the bounds of what is possible today."

"We are very excited to see the winners from this first round," added Suzi Iacono, senior science advisor in NSF's Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering. "The goal of US Ignite is to create 60 transformative applications over the next three to five years--apps with real societal impact.

"It's exhilarating to witness the enthusiasm that came through in the submissions and the grand ideas that emerged in this first round," she continued. "As we close the brainstorming contest and start the development phase, I think we are well on our way to achieving that goal."

Mozilla Ignite's Gold Medal Winner, $5,000

Imagine the ability to clearly and comprehensively assess an emergency--such as a hurricane, tornado or flood--by integrating data from multiple vantage points in real time from a location miles away from the chaos of the incident itself. Mozilla Ignite's gold medal winner devised an application idea to do just that.

Led by Jeremy Cooperstock of the Shared Reality Lab at McGill University, this team developed an idea for a system for Real-Time Emergency Response Observation and Supervision. The goal is to bring to bear live, high-quality video from multiple feeds and incorporate sensor data from a variety of sources that measure heat or smoke levels, for instance. The potential app would use massive computing capacity to perform these functions and inform decision-making and improve coordination of emergency responders. These tools would be powerful indeed in the hands of the right people, namely firefighters and rescue workers on the front lines of responding to emergencies of all sorts.

Mozilla Ignite's Silver Medal Winners, $2,500/each

A silver medal was awarded to a Purdue University team led by George Adams for an idea that aims to improve efficiency, profitability and quality in America's manufacturing processes. Remote Process Control Using a Reliable, Real-Time Protocol would set forth reliable, fast and real-time networks that would allow people to remotely control advanced manufacturing processes like 3D printing, for instance. This app could be a technological building block for other complex apps that might use 3D videoconferencing and eventually holograms.

A second silver medal goes to a cutting-edge Real-time 3D Interactive Telepresence idea that would far surpass today's teleconferencing capabilities, developed by a Seneca College, Toronto, team lead by Andor Salga of XBPointStream. There are also many potential applications for teaching and learning.

Mozilla Ignite's Bronze Medal Winners, $1,000/each

Two 2010 engineering graduates from Boston University--Amr Ali and Dmitri Boulanov--offered up an idea that earned them a bronze medal: a Long-Term Monitoring and Crisis Management System. Capitalizing on the ever-present and diverse sensors that are revolutionizing today's healthcare systems, the idea for this app would let patients and their doctors pull together a patient's own health data in real-time for speedy, comprehensive diagnosis and crisis prevention. This concept has broad application, from home monitoring and doctor-patient interaction to hospitals having access to patient records located anywhere in the "cloud."

Fred Dixon and his BigBlueButton team submitted the bronze-medal winning idea of High Quality Open Source Web Conferencing, with which every student could have access to a high-quality education no matter where they live. Their proposed app would create remote classroom experiences in a meaningful and effective way--for grades K through infinity.

All work and no play make Jack a dull boy, as the saying goes. Such could be the mantra of Virginia Tech/MIT graduate Bob Summers in offering his bronze medal- winning idea, Kinect Health 3D. The claim is intuitive: Physical therapy and fitness are easier in game form, and playing games with friends beats playing games alone. This application imagines a set of embedded health sensors and televisions that are intelligently networked to create a social fitness game. Beyond fitness, this app would enable remote physical therapy and with its quantified health data, could also empower physicians and specialists to engage in long-term assessment and tracking for early detection and intervention.

Cars are getting smarter and the entire transportation infrastructure should too, asserts Eric Endlich and Julian Valencia of EndlichStudios. And the judges found their argument and this app idea compelling, awarding it a bronze medal. Smart Streets for Smart Cars would enable a slew of services that could help reduce traffic, save energy and make roads safer using sensors and artificial intelligence to turn streetlights into a big network.

How can multiple-perspective video be effectively woven together to improve understanding of complex events and contribute to public safety? Camille Crittenden and her team from Data and Democracy Initiative at the University of California, Berkeley's Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society submitted a bronze-medal winning idea. Rashomon would index videos, allowing people to experience an event from many perspectives, zooming in or replaying videos to examine particular moments in detail. This technical building block could have widespread application as a means to derive important lessons from past events and inform policymakers on how to better prepare for future ones.

Next Steps: The Development Rounds

Today marks the start of the first of three development competition rounds, with $485,000 available overall for funding project development proposals. Mozilla Ignite invites developers everywhere to make these and other big ideas a reality. Participants may propose to collaborate on an existing idea or submit their own entirely new app development idea. The participation of international applicants is encouraged as long as they are members of U.S.-led teams. Applicants must ship some working code by October 25 to be eligible for early funding. Interested participants will gain access to NSF's GENI testbed to test their applications.

In addition, applicants will be eligible for expert mentorship and access to special resources. Apps will be judged by industry professionals and thought leaders like Tim O'Reilly, one of the best computer book publishers in the world; Connie Yowell of the MacArthur Foundation; Andrew McLaughlin of Tumblr; Susan Crawford of the Cardozo Law School; Brian Behlendorf of the World Economic Forum; John Lilly of Greylock Capital; Werner Vogels of Amazon; Aneesh Chopra, the former U.S. Chief Technology Officer and more.

"After an awesome period of brainstorming and imagination, we're now asking developer teams to show us some of their best ideas running in code," said Barkis. We're not looking for finished apps, just progress in that direction. We'll be disbursing the first $85,000 in awards this November, $150,000 in January 2013 and $250,000 in April 2013."

Aboriginal Initiatives: Classroom Climate Series | Centre for ...

The development of academic and professional programming in the area of classroom climate is relatively new and unexplored. Aboriginal Initiatives programming at the Centre for Teaching, Learning and Technology (CTLT) responded by creating an innovative professional development series called Aboriginal Initiatives: Classroom Climate.

During the initial development of this series, Amy Perreault, Coordinator of Aboriginal Initiatives at CTLT, combined her research expertise with her direct experience creating projects such as What I Learned in Class Today: Aboriginal Issues in the Classroom.

The development of this series mirrored a process often taken on by faculty who teach about Aboriginal and other socially contentious issues in their classes. In some ways the inevitable challenges faculty face in this endeavor were present here too; creating an approach that would allow for a diverse group of people, all coming with different levels of understanding and experiences, to come together and create a community.

During this year-long series, senior and junior faculty, teaching assistants, researchers, graduate students, and staff from all over the University have the opportunity to challenge their own assumptions about what they have learned about Aboriginal people, become more critically aware of their teaching and research practices, and learn more about how they engage with topics that challenge their own social location within the institution.

The breadth of participants? experiences, locations, and roles within the University create a unique environment for the exchange of interdisciplinary approaches to teaching, and an opportunity to engage with and share experiences from a diverse range of perspectives.

This strategically-designed series creates a unique learning experience for participants by combining a series of mini-class lectures, interactive group activities, and one-on-one discussions with a strong focus on activities and discussions designed to evoke critical thinking and self awareness. As a result, participants gain skills to create a more clearly developed and informed approach to understanding and teaching about Aboriginal and other socially contentious issues in a curricular setting.

A great way to learn more about services at Aboriginal initiatives, and the Classroom Climate series in particular, is to attend the CTLT Aboriginal Programs Open House on September 26.

The first monthly session, Here: Valuing, Recognizing and Acknowledging Place, is on October 2. During this session presenters will discuss the importance of teaching faculty, students, and staff about local histories and the diversity of British Columbia.

One of the four presenters for this session will be Sarah Ling, the Aboriginal Initiatives Graduate Academic Assistant at CTLT. She will be sharing a project she co-developed on campus called Decolonizing Knowledge. This initiative facilitates strategies to reconcile the cultural misrepresentation and appropriation that occurs on the UBC Point Grey campus, and pioneered a community-based naming process between the Musqueam First Nation and UBC Student Housing and Hospitality Services. In her work with CTLT, Sarah will assist with the creation of resources committed to developing a learning climate at UBC that prepares students, faculty, staff, and administration to better understand the dynamics of discussing Aboriginal issues in a multicultural, course-based environment. The resources will value and acknowledge the traditional and unceded territory of the Musqueam people which our learning and activities at UBC take place on.

Impact on Faculty Presenters and Participants

The diversity of experiences, both of the participants and the series presenters, has been cited as being one of the key strengths of this program. Past participants and presenters also noted that they appreciated the honesty and integrity of the conversations in each session, where facilitators were ?walking the walk? by demonstrating how they pedagogically built in how to have difficult conversations in their classes. Here?s what some of them had to say:

?

The nuanced nature of working with Aboriginal people and issues is often difficult to address in a substantive way. I was impressed with the preparation, level of participation and feedback from participants. It opened a space to further our work and it is a model for future discourse on these issues.

Rick Ouellet, Aboriginal Student and Community Development Officer (series presenter)

I believe that fostering productive conversations amongst faculty makes us better able to foster productive conversations in our classrooms with our students. It gives us important background knowledge, confidence in the language and terminology, practices to address sensitive topics, and pedagogical strategies. It gives us a sense, too, that we are not alone: other people in other classrooms are raising similar issues in different disciplinary contexts. One of the main things I have taken away from these sessions is the sense that yes, discussing Aboriginal issues in the classroom can be sensitive and highly charged, but if we do not give our students the space, time, and skills to discuss them there, then when will they have the opportunity? If not here, where?

Katherine Grafton (faculty participant)

While the focus of the series was the setting of the classroom, through discussions we discovered that the setting includes other spaces on campus. Libraries in particular became a space where the discussions turned as an example of what happens outside of the classroom. I think that it was an excellent opportunity for librarians to engage with faculty in a way that highlights the instruction on the reference desk, and how we face similar challenges with questions related to Aboriginal issues.

Sarah Dupont, Aboriginal Engagement Librarian, Xwi7xwa Library (staff participant)
